We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I have always been into art because of the influence of my mother being an artist and it was also in my genes, I have always been a very creative individual also. The idea for my business all started about 15 years ago when I started doodling with vibrant paint pens instead of using just a regular paint brush or a pencil as usual. I painted a seahorse and it came out really pretty and then I thought to myself that this could easily sell in a place like Sunny South Florida were I live. I started painting pictures of a variety of fish species in a unique style of vibrant colors, shapes and symbols that came intuitively to me. When I had acquired enough paintings I started going to local art shows and did very well selling my artwork. After doing art shows for a few years I had an idea to make stickers from the images of my artwork and sell to local surf and dive shops, I thought that they would look beautiful on car windows, water bottles, computers or surfboards. I found a company to print stickers for me and then I pitched them to the local shops. I never knew my sticker idea would of been such a great success but they consistently sold really well and I continue to sell them to local stores. Because of my recognition of an artist I also started getting orders to do original artwork for clients.
Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
A purely intuitive artist, I was born on the island of Jamaica and also grew up in Barbados, The Bahamas and Florida. Through my deep respect for the Sea and my passion for surfing, the magic of my art emerged. This art does not seek to imitate the obvious, rather it challenges the viewer to look deeper below the surface and to feel the exotic colors of the islands. I have a creative style of communicating my message of “consciousness” within pulsating shapes. I provide Original Acrylic Canvas paintings, signed prints, mural work and Stickers. I can paint any category of subjects. I think what sets me apart from others is my unique style. I am most proud of the Joy people get from my artwork.
(In Zen we don’t find the answers, we lose the questions)
