We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Lynn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
The first sale I made was on Etsy selling prints of my art. It wasn’t really the excitement of the moment that got me, as much as it was realizing that someone thought enough of my work to pay for a physical copy! I have given so many people my art for free and for the sake of sharing my talent with others over the years. It was extremely grounding and motivating to want to have more people discover my work!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an artist based in Muskegon, MI. I primarily focus on freelance artwork with my own business but tackle many different projects and opportunities with art education and anything that will allow me to spread some joy and creativity to those who need it. I would like to think my style is just “fun”. Regardless of what the subject is. I just enjoy the smiles and warm feelings my art can bring to someone! Over the last 5 years, I’ve also enjoyed getting into art education and volunteering my time at schools drawing and doing creative talks, along with teaching some classes at a nonprofit organization.
I try to do everything and anything. Portraits, Illustration ,Caricatures at weddings and many festivals around the state. Tattoo concepts and graphic design. I recently did some mural work and some artwork for comedian Joe Gatto from the hit show “Impractical Jokers” for his podcast.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve had my small business for close to 4 years, but I didn’t really gain a true ”following” until this year and that’s solely because of networking, going to events, and doing all of the things that will allow you to meet all kinds of people. Relationships are everything! Especially when it comes to creativity. You never know who your next muse or artistic job or opportunity will come from.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Getting off of small websites that took a chunk of my profits and eventually doing more original art vs prints is what I had to get better at. Everyone sells copy’s or more digital based things. I always want to evolve and be different in whatever I pursue creatively! It’s never been about the money for me. It’s always about the passion of my craft and getting the opportunity to be myself while showcasing that through my art.
