We recently connected with Alena Popovich and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alena, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The portion of being an artist that I had down was the creating. I have been drawing since a young age, and began doing commissions in high school. I always enjoyed doing custom pieces, and wanted to keep doing them. For me, the start of my business was as simple as that. I started with only offering black and white pencil drawings, then layering in color gouache paintings, digital paintings, etc. After slowly building my portfolio, with much support from family and friends recommending me to others, word of mouth greatly helped grow my business. I curated a website, with prints of my original work to follow.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Alena, I am an artist from Denver! I began Ally Popovich Art officially three years ago, that at the root you can find my love to create. I am heavily inspired by nature, emotion and music. A primary service I offer is custom commissions, in the way of black and white pencil drawings, acrylic paintings, watercolor paintings, digital drawings, etc. I enjoy doing portraits, and one of a kind pieces for clients. My body of work has many different styles, which makes for a unique experience browsing my work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is the moments created through my commissions. I have had the privilege to capture important emotions, memories, and loved ones in peoples lives. Being a part of that has been very special, and witnessing reactions and sentimentality inspired by a piece of mine is unmatched.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the tunnel vision of feeling like I was alone in my ongoing journey as an artist. I had it in my mind that my development and growth was the only thing that could surround me. I felt nervous to get out there, learn about the artist community in Denver. The confidence of putting myself and my work out there felt out of reach for a long time. Gradually I became more comfortable and took small steps to get out of that mindset. For me I started with art fairs and shows, and practiced talking to people and making friends, doing lots of different types of shows, and learning from those who had lots of experience. More recently, to art galleries and publications in Denver. It seems simple, but it was definitely a hurdle early on for me.
