Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alejandra Torres. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alejandra, appreciate you joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
It’s funny you ask that because this is a thought of mine daily. Yes, I do wish I had started my business sooner. Believe it or not, I have had my business idea of a full service writing agency since I was in college.
Just a few days ago, as I was sifting through old documents on my Mac, I found the website copy I had written for my business from 10 years ago. Back then, the phrase “Like a Boss” was used everywhere. So my original business name was “Write Like a Boss.” I wanted the name to be trendy and modern, appeal to the young professional audience, and express my services. I was very proud of this name.
Yet, I didn’t start my business then. Why? Honestly, who knows. It could have been for many reasons: I was more focused on pursuing a corporate career, the economic demand for high level writing wasn’t high, I knew little about entrepreneurship, perhaps I thought I was too young for people to take me seriously. Truthfully, I don’t remember why I waited so long to start.
Maybe, like many others, it just took me time to confidently step into my expertise and take a bet on myself.
I’m glad I did. Even if it took longer than I expected, I am here now doing what I love, pursuing my passion, and helping others along the way. I am fulfilling the dream I had in college, but, with a different name!
Turns out, the phrase “Like a Boss” aged out rather quickly. That’s okay with me though because my wanting-to-keep-up-with-the-trends mindset aged out as well. Now, I’m much more focused on providing immediate value, which I think my now-business name “Write Me Proudly” says it all.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce your business to our readers.
Gladly! Write Me Proudly is a full service writing agency. I offer content writing, copywriting, ghostwriting, and editing for any business or professional document you might think of. There are so many, I couldn’t possibly list them all.
I will say that websites, professional bios, resumes, cover letters, proposals, press releases, landing pages, emails, white papers, reports, and social media content make the top of the list.
I offer this work to small businesses and professionals who either are not readily skilled in writing or simply do not have the time to dedicate wholly to it. My clients understand the importance of good writing and are aware of all the benefits it could bring. They don’t want to miss out on communicating well with their audience, making a valid point, persuading their target audience, building brand loyalty, or expressing their unique business or professional worth.
This can all be accomplished with thoughtful, creative writing—which is precisely what I bring. I ground all my writing on the client’s individual voice and value. That’s what I am proud of the most and I believe that’s what sets me apart. I call this “getting in character in print.” It’s the challenge of learning a background and putting myself in someone else’s perspective that I enjoy best. This is something that comes very naturally to me, sort of like being a “written actress.”
I also appreciate how versatile this vocation is. On any given day, I could be pitching creative branding ideas to writing attention-grabbing marketing emails to enhancing online presence with distinguished website copy—or doing everything in between.
I’ve edited the work of published authors; written blogs for midsize corporations; consulted startup businesses on how to best showcase their brand and products online; drafted a 20-page annual report for a growing nonprofit organization; and ghostwritten speeches for local leaders.
I love the challenge of writing and am always looking for new ways to push my talent even further. But if there is one thing I want the audience to know, it is this: You can trust me to express your ideas and write in your voice. The writing I do is centered entirely on the client’s needs. My goal will always be to make sure you walk away happy with your new written communications.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
At some point, I cannot remember when, I became the go-to person for writing needs. It started within my close circle of friends, family, and co-workers. Then expanded to acquaintances, second-degree contacts, alumni of the same school, remote connections, and even strangers.
The word spread that I was good at writing and people just flocked to have writing done for them. It’s like that saying “If you build it, they will come.”
This is what inspired me to finally start my business. I saw I had paying customers who trusted me to write for them.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Definitely the most rewarding part is getting to tell people’s story. It never ceases to bring me joy when I show my client’s the finished product and hear their comments, such as “Wow, you took the words I had in my head and put it neatly on paper.”
Another rewarding aspect is helping client’s see more of their worth and more of their story through questioning and reflecting. I always have an initial Zoom call where I interview the client to learn more. I start by asking basic questions but then personalize the questions once I have enough context.
It’s great to repeat the narrative back to them, with a creative flair, and see how amazed they are by their remarkable story. That’s one of principles I go by in my line of work: Everyone has a worthwhile story to tell. My job is to help make sure it gets told.
