Hi Afreen Anjum, thanks for joining us today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?

I’m excited to share why I’m such a strong advocate for apprenticeships and internships because they offer unmatched opportunities for growth, and I want to inspire others to embrace them. With the right mentor, you can unlock a new world of learning and insight into how people truly work. Whether you’re learning through direct guidance or taking initiative on your own, both paths will shape you in unexpected ways.
I’ve experienced both sides. Some mentors guide you closely, while others give you space to navigate challenges. Both come with their own lessons. One may be more structured, while the other teaches you through trial and error. But the duration for both are different: one can be quick but the other longer. However, in the end, both offer invaluable growth.
Let me share a story from my journey as an architectural intern. During school my first internship took me to Kashmir, India far from Mumbai where I reside. I spent nearly a month documenting the mesmerising Mughal gardens, immersed in history and local culture. It was a transformative experience, teaching me the importance of balancing conservation with community development.
After graduating, I returned to the same firm, fortunately, I was hired. I was no longer just an intern—I had to provide support with responsibility. My boss, a renowned Conservation Architect, trusted me with major projects and empowered equal participation. Later after 8 months, she gave me a pivotal task: to lead a bid for a historic urban-scape development project and prepare a presentation to secure it solo. I wasn’t sure if she saw potential in me or if it was just a test, but I threw myself into the challenge. The result? We won the project.
This experience taught me that growth often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone and trusting the process. It’s not always about having the perfect answers but embracing opportunities and learning from them.

So, to anyone considering an apprenticeship or internship: embrace the challenges, find a mentor who believes in you, and step up when the chance arises. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Hi, I’m Afreen, originally from Mumbai, India, and now based in Brooklyn, New York City. I’m an architect by training, having completed my studies in India, and recently earned my Master’s in Urban Design here in New York. In addition to my academic journey, I’ve spent the past year working as an architectural lighting designer.

My career is rooted in the dynamic intersection of architecture, design, and engineering—the technical framework that transforms creative ideas into reality.

Through my experiences, I’ve learned that talent and opportunity are two powerful forces that continuously shape our paths. The key question is: which one do we want to be defined by? It’s a constant evolution, and it’s up to us to choose how we embrace and channel them to shape our future.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

My goal is to achieve financial independence and, more importantly, to inspire my family to believe in the potential of their daughters. I want to encourage them to embrace their independence, think beyond boundaries, and be recognized as individuals—just as my parents did for me, for which I am forever grateful. Ultimately, my mission is to contribute to society by creating or participating in initiatives that give back and make a meaningful impact. I aim to use the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my journey—whether from school, work, or life experiences—to take on responsibilities that lead to positive change.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

Resilience is a powerful and defining trait. While one person may surrender at the first obstacle, another holds firm, determined to turn their dreams into reality. The difference lies in where you choose to draw the line. It’s crucial to consistently strengthen your character, and if your environment threatens to undermine it, stand up and address it. The true goal is to be resilient in protecting your growth and relentlessly improving yourself, no matter what challenges arise.

Moreover, the value of hard work should always be acknowledged. Recognition is not just a reward; it’s a vital fuel that keeps you motivated, reinforces your dedication, and inspires you to continue pushing forward. When your efforts are recognized, it empowers you to keep striving for excellence.
