Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adriana Murillo Zaun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adriana, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
One among many things that my parents did right is to be sustainable. I didn’t know any terminology, but for sure I knew by actions that zero waste was important in my life. My parents taught me how to be creative and re-use items instead it going into the trash. For instance, my mother was so great using every small scrap of fabric to create a patch garment or home decoration. My dad was always aware of what it was throwing in the trash and said we can always minimized trash by reusing it in something else, we just have to think first. I deeply appreciate my parents for teaching me how to be sustainable starting at such a young age. In the past I did it to follow their example but now I understand how important is for my environment. This lifestyle is a habit that I am teaching to my kids as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am the fourth generation in a sewing passion family and my daughter is also following the path. My mother taught me how to sew when I was 10 years old, but my sewing experience became serious when I turned 15 years old and helped my mother to make my own quinceañera dress. I realized that sewing was fascinating and decided to make it a professional career. I have been sewing for 33 years. I studied Fashion Design at Mesa College and Fine Art at City College. I am currently studying Art applied in Design at SDSU. Education and sewing are my bliss, so I became a sewing teacher. My daughter has been my loyal student since she was 9 years old.
I have been teaching sewing classes for 10 years in the community. My last teaching journey was at Community College Continuing Ed at the clothing and textile department before we were hit by the pandemic. At the moment I teach private classes for all ages.
My husband and I created a small business together when we met, MUZA COUTURE with the first two letters of our last names. Magical things happen all the time in this sewing studio located in our home.
I was born in Mexico and I grew up being sustainable which I am very proud of. I became an alteration specialist, vintage rescue expert, handmade lover and a one of a kind designer.
Slow fashion is part of the solution to help our environment. My goal is to provide my services to the community, so I can help people to became sustainable through fashion but with style. Looking good is also important!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe what helps build reputation in my business is that my clients are able to perceive my passion for what I do. Sewing and teaching are my bliss. So when I’m working, I am truly enjoying it from my heart.
When it comes to sewing, projects get done professionally by paying attention to every detail. I am honest about price, time and designs possibilities.
When it comes to teaching, I make sure every student understands as much possible. My classes are always organized and most importantly I bring enthusiasm to class.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I lead a team with integrity! To begin with, I lead by example. I always make sure I am the first one who follows the rules, plan or anything that is part of the team work. Also, if someone on the team makes a mistake I do my best to manage by empowering instead minimizing. I believe inspiring others is the most important aspect for a good/productive work environment. Restoring integrity when a mistake is made to keep a healthy and positive attitude.
