We recently connected with Adamary Fernandez and have shared our conversation below.
Adamary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
In one word, yes, I wish I did start my business sooner. The joy my business has brought me in the last four years is unmatched. Dainty Hands Co. began in 2019 on Christmas Day just before the pandemic. I was decorating for a Christmas party and I decided to pick up a chalk board sign I had and create a welcome sign. Needless to say, everyone kept asking me who I hired to make the welcome sign and when I would say I made it, they instantly said I should open a business. I was always too critical of myself and felt that I wasn’t talented enough. My husband pushed me to open up my business and I remember him telling me specifically, “what’s the worse that can happen?” and he’s was right what is the worse that can happen. Opening up DHC sooner would have just meant more experience and more memories made in both my life and career. Being a business owner has taught me to not be so critical, enjoy the process always and to always get back up when a mistake is made.

Adamary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Entering the calligraphy business seemed to happen over night for me. I’ve been doing calligraphy since 2014 as a hobby, but really started pursuing it as a small business in December 2019. I did my very first wedding in December of 2019 for a close friend and at that moment I fell in love with the wedding aspect of calligraphy. I specialize in wedding calligraphy, signage and day of details. Anything from welcome signs to custom jean jackets. Specializing in personalized calligraphy services for weddings, I aim to solve the problem of generic, mass-produced wedding stationery by offering a one-of-a-kind experience. What makes me different is that I pay an immense amount of attention to details and work with each couple personally to make sure their style and story come through in my hand lettering. To some it might just be calligraphy, but it’s so much more than that. It sets the mood and tone for certain little details throughout your wedding night. Wedding planning can come with its hurdles and I want to make sure this part of the experience is fun and easy going for each couple.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Two words. Building Relationships. When building a reputation especially as a small business relationships with clients and vendors is crucial. That is how individuals meet you, know you and most importantly begin to trust you. When meeting new clients/couples and vendors I make sure to always get to know them first. This allows for clients and vendor to feel comfortable with asking for anything they need. Building relationships allows for an open line of communication to exist without boundaries where with vendors or event with couples we can work together to execute the perfect wedding reception.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Instagram ! I am the utmost grateful for that social media platform and to all of my followers who have been with me from the beginning and up to now. Instagram has been the one platform that a large number of my previous clients/couples have either posted my work or shared my posts and allows for potential new clients to see my work too.
I like to call Instagram the “word of mouth” social media platform.
