We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adaeze Orji. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adaeze below.
Adaeze, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
This question really made me think. So often we easily remember what our parents did wrong as spend less time on what went right (at least in my case). A little background my dad is an extremely traditional Igbo man and my mom at the time was the worldly definition of submissive. However my dad use to make me perform for his house guest all the time, and I would get in trouble or even sent to my room if I did not take it seriously. I use to sing songs that I learned in choir from my moms church. I was not aware that was my dads way of training me to become an unapologetic performer this many years later.
My mother would make sure my siblings and I looked nice in public and even at home. It makes me laugh some times when I think about the comments she would make to ensure we understood the value in showing up confident and clean looking. She’s my number 1 stunna! (in my lil Wayne voice).
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I became a professional artist in 2020, but I began my journey 2019 winning two singing competitions in Atlanta Ga. I spent many years supporting other artist and offering ideas for branding. Some listened some didn’t so I decided with the fire desire burning within me to do it myself. Still makes me chuckle a little but. I offer my clients/fans a beautiful blend of West African-Nigerian culture that’s pleasantly digestible. They go home feeling inspired and closer to many of our roots which is Africa some Israel but that’s a completely different story. I get to also solve problems within the health and wellness niche by providing detox teas and natural energy supplements that have transformed my body and mental space for the better. My customer are able to detox the gut and lose those stubborn inches as a reward.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So I was given the opportunity to come up with a production song for a TV Series. I was given very basic instructions on how they wanted the track to sound and what didn’t help is that I was working with a third party. Now I’ve done production playlist before but this one was specifically for a TV show that was 90s themed. The reference track was a song by TLC and I was to create something similar but not the same. I came up with a song in like 2 hours and revised it in less than 12 hours then recorded it in under 24 hours. Did all of that just to get a response of “ehh”. I wasn’t told if the melody was good or if I needed to change the first or second verse, just “ehh”. That didn’t stop me or shake my confidence I believe in what Les Brown says “You have you fail your way to the top”. And knowing that it makes me smile and gives me the courage I need.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In my health and wellness business I began selling the products as samples and that started to go well, but I can’t be everywhere at a time so I’m actively learning how to direct customers to order online and also become recurring customer because the products really work and its about being consistent to truly see a long lasting change.
