We were lucky to catch up with Abin Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Abin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Through experience, the internet, and people! Honestly, I should’ve started earlier. I waited a long time for the right equipment, but none of that stuff matters. When you first start, it’s really exciting and the social aspects of photography are also really rewarding. The most essential skills are your willingness to learn, ability to work with others, and most importantly, having fun! An obstacle that stopped me was definitely the amount of things I was juggling at the time. Working 9-5 while also learning new creative skills was tough.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Abin “Bino” Thomas, and I’m a travel photographer from Dallas, Texas! I’ve loved photography, dance, and creative arts since childhood. I initially took photos for friends and family until others reached out to hire me for their events. Now, I do wedding choreography, audio editing, and wedding photography. My experience and work ethic is definitely what sets me apart from others. I meet with my clients and tailor all my services to what they need. I’ve worked with respected people and teachers in my fields. I’m most proud of the photos I get to take on trips. Especially ones out of country! They remind me to always have fun with my camera. I’d want people to know that I’m very adaptive and understanding. I solve their issues with posing, being comfortable in front of the camera, scheduling, and even sourcing other media vendors if needed. I’d want people to view my brand as cinematic, nostalgic, and comforting.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I chose to pursue a creative career around October 2023. It was a huge shift from what I was doing full-time, which was developing and testing tax software. Leaving that life of stability and consistent income was hard, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Having my own business means I’m responsible for my success, and that I choose to show up every day for no other reasons other than passion, and my drive to help people.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about resources like Photography Facebook Groups, Trade for Print Groups, and also Pixieset! These are all tools that could’ve definitely helped me with my branding, pricing, and contracts when I first started. I eventually discovered these through experience and honestly, trial and error.
