We were lucky to catch up with Abigail Gibbons Saini recently and have shared our conversation below.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My relationships has helped me build a trusted reputation in my market of entrepreneurs, business owners and athletes. We all have our own “superpower” and I always encourage younger professionals to learn into their power and purpose to guide their career paths. I’ve also loved to network with others and learn about the careers of those around me. The same goes for my friends, peers and family in my life. I think this skill to authentically connect and build relationships with others helped build trust in my market and open doors to marketing and branding opportunities.
The relationships I’ve build have landed me press opportunities and organic interviews on social media and panel discussions.
One important thing I did as well was build my own personal brand. I took time to leverage social media to have important social conversations online and offline through moderating panels that I facilitated. By giving a platforms to others to share their stories, I also began to organically build my own brand and reputation.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that I need to do it all alone, and that pivoting my career path means failure. When I was running my company I came to the realization that while I loved what I was doing, it became more of a passion project than a career path. I also wanted to have more tangible impact alongside the community and network building I was achieving through my business.
When I made the decision to pivot my career and pause my business, I faced a mixed bag of feedback. Some of the influencers in my network were disappointed I was walking away from my business and felt I was giving up (at times, I worried about this too). Others thought I would have a hard time being successful in a traditional industry such as finance.
On the other hand, those who expressed their concerns also deeply supported me. I had build a team around me without even knowing it who wanted to see me succeed.
I had to unlearn the lesson that being an entrepreneur means you’re doing it alone, you can build a supportive team. I also had to learn to trust my decision and my gut when it comes to my career and what I am capable of desire the opinions of others. I learned that people usually express their concerns because they care, not because they are trying to bring you down.
