We were lucky to catch up with Abby Cone recently and have shared our conversation below.
Abby, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
When I was in middle school my parents opened up their own business. I witnesses all the hard work they poured into their shop and was luckily enough to be involved. My sister and I helped clean, paint and freshen up the store, right along side my parents. Even though the store failed, my parents still to this day do not regret it, teaching me that it’s better to chase your dreams and possibly fail than to go through life with regrets wondering “what if”. Having watched someone I respect “fail” and still make it out on the other side really changed my view on what it means to be successful. Witnessing my parent’s work ethic and ability to create a reality that resonated with them, gave me the extra courage I needed to break away from the social norm and become my own boss.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a professional organizer who started a business after experiencing burnout in my field of study, psychology.
My goal is to create spaces that reflect one’s goals, dreams and lifestyle through in-person organizing and room by room decluttering. I believe in creating a space that is unique to each person. A space that is filled with objects that you love, objects that evoke positive feelings. A space that is organized and not cluttered.
One of my favorite things about this career is the follow up with clients. This is when I get to hear all the wonderful stories about how their life has changed after reclaiming their space and taking back all that time spent looking for misplaced items.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
When I first started my business I had an elderly client who hired me to make his house more inviting for his new girlfriend. The goal was for me to complete this task over a few weeks while they were out of town on a trip. The job required me to declutter, organize, clean, stage and decorate. One of my task was to pick out fragrances for the home via candles, soaps, cleaning supplies and room sprays. Here for the cozy + inviting vibes! Fast forward to the night before the client and his girlfriend arrive. I did one last tidying up of the house and decided that it for sure needed to smell great right when they walked in. So I opened a window to let some fresh autumn air in and lite a candle. I was finally done with the job and was feeling great, I knew my client would be pleased. After my long day I locked up and headed home.
While driving I remembered the CANDLE! In full panic I turned around and drove back, expecting the worse.
Turns out I snuffed out the candle before leaving the first time. I was too exhausted and was on autopilot when locking up.
While not a near death moment- it was a lesson to remember. Stay present, know my physical and mental limits and don’t light candles in a client’s home.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe the biggest contributor to me building my reputation in my market is, my work. The work I’ve completed for clients has provided me with stunning photos, repeat clients, referrals and five star reviews.
