We recently connected with Abby Case and have shared our conversation below.
Abby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear a story from back when you were an intern or apprentice. What’s a memorable story you can share with us?
Many people have taken me under their wing to show me the ropes and give me advice. My most favorite one was when Sheridan Lynne Photography reached out to me out of the blue and asked me to be a second shooter for a wedding. She and I had never meet before. We were both taking a risk, but she saw my Instagram and thought I was good enough to work with her. She is a fantastic photographer, I haven’t seen one photo of hers that I haven’t liked. We meet up and took the 2 hour drive to get to know each other. I got to learn how to second shoot and learn some new poses. She let me use one of her lenses to see how I liked it. She has taught me so much and I am very grateful. Since then we have meet up and done a few shoots together. We both plan on doing more together.

Abby, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a photographer, new to making a business out of a once hobby. I love doing maternity and portraits. I am trying to pivot to a more creative art style but I still have a bit of learning to do on that end. I am down to earth and open to any ideas and advice. I try to make my clients feel as comfortable and confident as I can without pushing any boundaries they have. I want to learn the stories behind the people I’m photographing so that I can emphasize this as best as I can in their photos.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Who moved my cheese by Spencer Johnson. It’s about 4 mice and their cheese goes missing. The mice all have different opinions on what it is they should do. The story behind it is that you can either adapt to your surroundings or stay stuck in the same place. I think it’s something everyone should read.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Making videos with my photos. This has become the newest outlet for people. Everyone’s attention has been turned to things like tik tok and instagram reels. Posting photos just doesn’t cut it anymore. Filming behind the sense content while trying to take photos is quite difficult. Im normally to focused to remember to do so.
