We were lucky to catch up with Aaronic Dorsey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aaronic, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents did a great job at creating a space for me to be a kid. You are only a child once and so much of your childhood shapes who you become as you continue to get older. Having the childhood I did has allowed me to mature to the understanding of just enjoying things for what they are and appreciating every little moment. Without that freedom and encouragement to be a kid from my parents my life would be very mundane and I probably would’ve never been able to dream how I do now. It also allowed me to develop a perspective to appreciate thing for what they are so that you no have no regrets when it’s time to move on.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Aaron Dorsey, known professionally as Aaronic Dorsey, is an American rapper, songwriter, and producer. Originally from Montgomery, Alabama, Aaronic moved to At- lanta as a child and has since immersed himself in various avenues to develop his mu- sicality and artistry further. His earliest musical influences range from Kirk Franklin to Stevie Wonder. Growing up in the church, Aaronic had limited exposure to rap music. It was not until the 5th grade when he was introduced to artists such as T.I. and 50 Cent. However, it was the likes of Kanye West, Outkast, and Pharrell Williams that ul- timately laid the groundwork and inspiration for the sound Aaronic now delivers as an artist. During Dorsey’s junior year of high school, he began releasing freestyles that led to the release of his first mixtape. Since then, Aaronic has continued to evolve his creativity through songwriting, production, and curating visual companions to his mu- sical releases. Even though Aaronic started by rapping for classmates classmates, it was him getting involved in the teen ministry at his church that allowed him to develop and find his stage presence. Aaronic has performed in numerous open mics and showcases in the Atlanta area. Known for his high energy on stage and crafty lyrics, Aaronic cap- tivates audiences by providing them with the pureness of who he is at all costs. He strongly believes in giving people raw art, well done. Aaronic Dorsey just released a Garage Session Version of his project titled ‘What Summer Was’ and it is available on all streaming platforms. Aaronic is also currently working on new music along with prepping a live intimate experience in further promotion of his recent musical offerings.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of the most impactful books I’ve read is The Creative Habit by Twayla Tharpe. This book is one that changed my approach to creativity. In this book Twayla breaks down how being creative is more a way of thinking rather than a special gift that only few are blessed with. I’m always referencing this book to fellow creatives and always going back to it for reminders. It was this book that really transformed my whole reading experience. In the book Tharpe talks about the importance of really taking ownership of the books you own by highlighting constantly and writing all on the pages. For years I had stopped reading cause I just didn’t enjoy as much as I did as a child and this approach has renewed my love for reading and further stressed the importance of it as a whole.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a artist is the ability to to be able to turn nothing into something. Turning a metronome into a whole beat or an empty track to a whole song. The bigger reward is seeing people being impacted by this creation you’ve built because only you know the many phases and drafts it took to get it to this point where it is now able to be understood and received.
