One of the most important ways to have a large impact in life is by focusing on communities that are ignored and overlooked. These communities are often the ones most in need of help, tools, and services but for a variety of reasons the largest players in most industries chose not to work on serving them. We’ve been so touched by the thousands of members of our community who are working on serving the underserved from tackling food deserts to building empowering solutions for the neurodiverse. Each week, you’ll find us highlighting folks serving underserved communities.

Mitigating Lives framework is directly associated with the underserved community throughout Baltimore City. Not only does Baltimore City have a 200% below poverty rate across different ethnic groups but they also have a significant percentage of 11.6% of individuals who are considered to have disabilities are considered vulnerable according to the American Community Survey 2016-2020. Not to mention the elderly population at a 6.4 % rate are considered vulnerable as well. These factors combined are heart wrenching while at the same time very rewarding to be able to assist in the efforts of eradicating homelessness, decreasing stress caused by the lack of necessities needed for one to function properly in their day to day activities, and having a hand in the rehabilitation process of many Baltimoreans. Here at Mitigating Lives, we are driven to do our part in making the world a better place. Since 2022, we have taken part in a wide range of activities that empower individuals and our communities. We strive to build productive relationships and make a positive impact with all of our pursuits. Read more>>

In a way, we do. This summer, we hosted the “I AM the Solution” STEM Summer Camp, where 45 students benefited from learning about STEM, through project-based learning (PBL). We taught students about how to solve problems, personally and publicly. The students served, all African-American, were able to experience free STEM projects, hear from guest speakers from our community, and learn about how hunger affects the Memphis community. This population was “underserved” because there is often a lack of STEM education for Black and Brown students, especially throughout the summer. However, we were able to do this program in conjunction with Havenview Middle School’s Summer Learning Academy and financial support from our donors. Read more>>

Despite the rhetoric surrounding educational equality, the reality for many minority students in the United States is starkly different. The U.S. educational system, often heralded as a beacon of opportunity, stands as one of the most unequal in the industrialized world. Student experiences and learning opportunities are frequently dictated by one’s social status, leading to disheartening disparities in educational outcomes. These inequalities not only undermine the potential of countless individuals but also echo through generations, perpetuating cycles of disadvantage. In response to these pervasive challenges, I founded TANK EdDucates LLC, an education consulting company dedicated to dismantling the inequities embedded within schools and organizations. Our mission is rooted in a student-centered approach that honors and amplifies the cultural strengths of each learner. By fostering an environment of engagement and inclusivity, we strive to enhance educational experiences and outcomes for all students. Read more>>

Imagine working 6 days a week at a dangerous job that leaves you little time for your family just to keep a roof over your heads. Imagine putting in that work just to be boxed in by your race and seen as “less” before the other person even hears your name. That’s the life some of my friends and family have. It’s the lives of extraordinary people doing triple what the average person can do yet never being acknowledged the way they deserve or represented the way they should be. That’s what I hope to change in my music. I aim to be the voice that gives them the recognition they deserve. Read more>>
