Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark E. Menzie

Hi Mark E., please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

Of course! My journey began with a deep love for fashion and design. Growing up, I was always inspired by the creativity and storytelling within the fashion world. This passion led me to pursue formal education at Parsons School of Design, and later the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where I honed my skills and developed a strong foundation in design and styling.

After completing my education, I spent a decade in the fashion industry, primarily working as a freelance stylist for luxury retail brands and specializing in digital sales. This experience allowed me to understand the nuances of fashion branding and marketing, shaping my approach to both design and storytelling through style.

I later branched out to establish my own clothing line, Menzie by Design, where I focus on creating unique, thought-provoking pieces. Alongside this, I’ve delved into education, teaching fashion design to high school students and collaborating with local businesses to inspire the next generation of designers. Recently, I’ve even stepped into the world of styling and marketing consulting, blending my years of experience with a passion for sharing my knowledge.

Each chapter of my journey has been about merging creativity with purpose, whether through design, education, or building connections within the fashion community. I’m excited about what lies ahead as I continue to grow my brand, explore new opportunities, and leave a positive impact in the industry.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

The road has been anything but smooth, but every bump and detour has been a lesson. Starting out, one of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to stand out in a competitive industry while staying true to my creative vision. It’s not easy balancing artistic integrity with the demands of the fashion business, especially when you’re building a brand from the ground up.

As a freelancer, the lack of stability was another hurdle. I often had to juggle multiple projects, manage fluctuating income, and constantly prove myself in every new opportunity. That kind of unpredictability can be both thrilling and exhausting.

Launching Menzie by Design brought its own set of struggles, from managing production costs to navigating marketing in a digital-first world. As a solo entrepreneur, wearing multiple hats—designer, marketer, business strategist—was overwhelming at times. Building a brand, especially in a saturated market, requires relentless effort and perseverance.

On top of these professional challenges, I’ve faced moments of self-doubt, especially when comparing my progress to others in the industry. Learning to trust my own pace and celebrate small victories has been a key part of my growth.

More recently, transitioning into education and mentoring has been rewarding but comes with the challenge of balancing my creative pursuits with teaching commitments. However, these struggles have only fueled my drive, reminding me that every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.

My work is centered around fashion design, styling, and education, with a strong focus on storytelling and individuality. Through my brand, Menzie by Design, I create unique, thoughtfully crafted pieces that blend bold creativity with timeless elegance. My designs often reflect personal narratives and cultural influences, making them both wearable and meaningful.

Fashion Design : I design pieces that challenge conventions while staying approachable and versatile. My focus is on creating clothing that empowers and inspires the wearer.

Styling : I have over a decade of experience as a fashion stylist, specializing in luxury retail and digital sales. My approach combines a keen eye for detail with a deep understanding of brand storytelling.

Education & Mentorship : Teaching fashion design to high school students and collaborating with local organizations has allowed me to guide and inspire the next generation of creatives.

What I’m most proud of : I’m particularly proud of the evolution of Menzie by Design and the lookbooks I’ve created for the brand. These projects reflect not just my creative growth but also the connections I’ve made with collaborators and audiences along the way. I’m also incredibly proud of the impact I’ve had as a teacher, helping young designers discover their voices and talents.

What sets me apart : What makes my work unique is the balance I strike between creativity and functionality. I approach design as a narrative tool, ensuring that every piece tells a story while remaining practical and wearable. My multidisciplinary background in design, styling, and education also gives me a holistic perspective, allowing me to connect with people across different facets of the industry.

Ultimately, my goal is to make fashion accessible, meaningful, and empowering, whether through the clothes I design, the advice I offer, or the lessons I teach.
