Today we’d like to introduce you to Koku Gonza
Hi Koku, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a singer-songwriter and guitarist originally from the U.S., but my heart is always in Tanzania, where my family is from. I began my musical journey as a child, influenced by my parents’ love for music. I started with voice and piano, singing and playing in various ensemble settings. During college at Indiana University, I finally had the opportunity to learn my dream instrument, the guitar. After taking a semester of basic guitar lessons, I dove into it passionately.
Shortly after graduating, I played a series of gigs in Chicago that taught me lessons beyond what school and church could offer. I realized that the life of a musician demands everything that a full-time profession requires and more. The belief in oneself became the strongest superpower I developed as an artist. While in Chicago, I created several projects in the Afro Soul genre, drawing inspiration from my favorite artists.
Influenced by the neo-soul vibes of Sade, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Miriam Makeba, I released my acclaimed debut album Radiozophrenic in 2012. My single “L.O.V.E.” gained global attention on platforms like MTV World Music and BET International. In 2017, I moved to New York to increase my chances of touring internationally. Since then, I’ve released five independent projects, collaborated with Grammy-winning artists, and toured internationally, including a memorable performance at Italy’s renowned Umbria Jazz Festival in 2019.
In 2023, my music video for the song “Zanzibar” was featured at the Women Deliver Conference in Kigali, Rwanda. I also had the pleasure of performing at the IATF Creative African Nexus in Cairo, Egypt. That same year, I released my lead single “Utamu” from my upcoming fusion project, Young Maandazi. This project, created in collaboration with the renowned Accra-based bassist and record producer Nee Mantse, artfully blends Ghanaian highlife music with Swahili and English lyrics. Young Maandazi celebrates both Tanzanian and Ghanaian cultures and is set for release in fall 2024. Through this project, I explore my deep connection to my African heritage and draw inspiration from my travels across the continent.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My artistic journey, much like the vocal inflections in my favorite song, “Sweetest Taboo” by Sade, has its ups and downs. My struggles include consistent funding, maintaining a creative mental state, and balancing these with earning a living as an artist. I’ve learned to pivot and rethink how I present my art, paying close attention to how my music is heard and how I’m perceived. While having talent is a blessing, the obstacles associated with it can be discouraging. I believe that these challenges are here to teach me, and I must be ready to learn. For me, music captures and preserves these lessons and life experiences in time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Driven by love, culture, nature, and beauty, and inspired by icons like Sade, Burna Boy, Stevie Wonder, and Prince, my Tanzanian roots infuse each soulful track I create. Named after the Haya tribe, where “Koku Gonza” means “the one who loves,” I specialize in Afro Fusion, blending my favorite genres into unique compositions. Renowned for my songwriting, guitar skills, and vocals, I proudly bring to life the dreams I’ve visualized on my vision board. My approach to manifesting dreams is grounded in action and realism, setting me apart through the tangible realization of my goals.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in good or bad luck. Instead, I believe in preparing for what you feel you deserve and want in life. You can have what seems like good luck, but if you’re not prepared to receive the blessings that come with it, does that really make it bad luck?
