Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Valenzuela
Hi Genesis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m not really sure where to start.
I’m one of six children, born to Immigrant parents that came to the Dominican Republic in search of a better life. Out of all my siblings, I was the only one born in the United States and you could say that because of that aspect, I have always been the black sheep in my family. I was always creative and artistic from a young age and although my family members were in awe of my interests and talents, they saw life most of the time from a scarcity mindset. Scarcity mindsets are often a result of generational trauma, and being that my family was looking for a better life (away from their native land) you can say that they had a very fixed view about money, survival, and secure careers. I’ve always gone against the grain when it came to my family and their ideas of success, survival, and abundance. I am the sum of everything that I have learned up until now.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth at all but the obstacles I had endured have taught me a lot about my self. Some struggles were things like
– learning boundaries to have with family, clients; and my self.
(Family members that have a scarcity mindset don’t encourage or uplift you, they project their financial fears on to you and if you listen, their fears become yours and you achieve nothing.)
-boundaries with clients in order to navigate through my connections with a sense of professionalism and self preservation so that people wouldn’t take advantage of me or my services . when I began to make money as a freelancer and becoming my own boss I had to create a system for myself to follow. I had to save money and evaluate my sense of luxury as well as my relationship to money.
Times where my finances needed work
And I was struggling. Doing my best to stay focused and committed to my goals despite what my bank account looked like and still remaining positive mentally
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have 3 passions I’m currently developing.
I create medicinal herbal products for my company BrujasxCabinet + do community events for the collective centralized around mental health, natural healing, and ancestral wisdom
I preform as professional roller skater at events and venues, and also do it as hobby. (Artistic skating)
And a few days out of the week I am a tattoo artist, creating designs that are intention based (ornamental patterns). All designs I create provide a personal activation for the client. Clients ask for a design to be created with a specific intention and I create the pattern work to invoke the magic into their design.
I’m known for being bright, and high when I’m skating, when I’m tattooing I’m known for my knowledge and in the plant medicine world I’m seen as both a teacher and a student. I have many sides to me. I am most proud of my self development work regarding my character, and what sets me apart from others is my willingness to always work towards my potential as well as my down to earth personality .
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to buy land, preferably either in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica or Peru, and to create space that would double as a non for profit and my home.
I would want to have a few different things on the property. Guest yurts, An area to skate that would double as an area for guest when doing outdoor community events , and art studio space, and ceremony space for medicine work as well as tattooing.
I would like to have the space to offer it to community members. Ideally gain sponsorship for certain materials, like art supplies, clay ect and have educational spaces for children and teens in the community.
Having medicine ceremonies for people on the island to reconnect them to the power of the universe and their ancestral connection to the land. Looking for teachers to volunteer as well as creating an overall community space for important discussions around family development, boundaries, generational trauma, environmental issues and social justice.
