Today we’d like to introduce you to LISA CRAWFORD.
Hi LISA, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a child growing up in South Africa I had a passion for movies. We had no television back then, radio and movies at our local hall or theaters was our entertainment. I would dream about one day going to Hollywood and becoming a filmmaker. Fast forward to Canada, when my son was old enough to move out. I decided to pursue my childhood dream. Starting as a background performer. While on set on the James Franco film Kin, I was watching the twin directors direct the actors. I said to myself “I can do that”. Soon after I started taking acting lessons with Niagara Falls based acting coach, Livingstone Beaumont. A month later I landed my first role in a student film, followed by various non-union roles. I earned my first ACTRA credit on Umbrella Academy season one opening scene. That year I decided to produce my own short films. Along the way I connected to amazing creative people in the film business. Leading up to me creating and producing the award winning series Pink is In, with my amazing partners Goldy, Kim, Aharon & Darren.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a transgender woman I was faced with some discrimination in the film business. There were limited opportunities for me. For transgender roles, I was told by an agent I looked too much like a woman, for female roles I was too tall or large. That is why I decide to produce my own films. Allowing me to be more inclusive of all diversities and looks in my films.
We’ve been impressed with Pink One Productions Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pink One Productions Inc. is a Hamilton, Ontario based production company made up of local arts professionals. The diverse shareholders consist of transgender, gender queer and cisgender professionals. The company was established in June of 2020. Our motto is “creativity through diversity” and we intend to include professionals from diverse backgrounds both in front of and behind the camera. Our comedy series, Pink Is In is currently airing in Canada on Bell Fibe TV1. Pink Is In is also available on Tubi In the USA, Mexico & Australia. The series has won three film festival awards, three ACTRA award nominations and three Canadian Screen Award nominations. We fully recognize the value and importance of representation for everyone in film and television. We are excited to use our combined talents to produce quality products that viewers will enjoy.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Through my film career I had a spiritual awakening. I have learned to remove ego from my career, focussing more on the collective. Helping other advance their careers brings me the most joy.
