Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimeka Charles
Hi Kimeka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My first interaction with makeup was through the cheap children’s makeup that was bought for me around Christmas time. This initial exposure did not spark a passion but rather an interest in the art of makeup because my dream was always to become a doctor. At a later age I decided to take an interest in makeup, my plan was to complete one class. One class led to another, as I continued to expand my knowledge and expertise in the field of makeup artistry.
Each class provided me with new insights, techniques, and experiences that helped me refine my craft and develop my own unique style.
Throughout this journey, I have been fortunate to have the unwavering support of my family. Their encouragement and belief in my talent have been instrumental in helping me pursue my career in makeup artistry. As I honed my skills and gained more experience, I started taking on freelance projects, working with clients, participating in photoshoots, and other events. These opportunities allowed me to showcase my talent, build a portfolio, and establish myself as a professional makeup artist.
Today, I am proud to say that I have turned my interest of makeup into a career and I am presently in medical school. Through dedication, hard work, continuous learning, and the support of my loved ones, I have been able to carve out a niche for myself in the competitive world of beauty and cosmetics, I have future plans to expand my business and become a Medical Doctor.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. It has been the opposite of a smooth road, some challenges I have faced at the beginning of my career are; the lack of trust in my skills when doing clients, the financial uncertainty, the need to be perfect, saying this out loud really shows that those were internal struggles that I caused.
I recently heard a video that said, ‘You put your trust in something at all times.’ whenever you believe you cannot accomplish something, you trusted that you do not have what it takes. So in the same way trust that God has given you access to resources to fulfill your goals or the access to resources to help you begin the process and along the way you’ll get access to the remainder of tools needed to complete your goal.
Some real struggles I’ve faced are marketing, and social media to name a few. There is a huge misconception that posting on social media is marketing, I had to learn the hard way that those are two entirely different things. Additionally I felt that just by opening a business I was an entrepreneur. Yes I know entrepreneur literally means someone who opens a business who takes financial risks in hopes of making a profit but if that’s the only goal then you’ve failed before you’ve begun. Start with a purpose in mind, what are you selling (and let me give you a hint it’s not only the item) it’s the feeling invoked by the client when they see/acquire the item, the feeling of a problem solved or knowledge gained.
