My father, Fabian Helmer, was my hero. Our special father-daughter relationship began the day I was born and ended the day he died.
He was an ethnic German immigrant, born in Romania. After World War II he came to the United States, leaving his country behind. Although he was born in Romania, and forced to fight for the German Army during World War II. He was sent to the Russian front for almost two years and endured many hardships during that time; lack of supplies, lack of food and the bitter cold. Read more>>

I have three heroes that have shaped my journey. My grandfather, my grandmother and one of my best friends. Although all of them are no longer with us physically, their presence is still strong and greatly felt every single day.
My grandparents taught me determination and focus in everything I do, and to never give up until I succeed. My grandfather was a veteran that not only fought for this country, but also worked diligently to bring my grandmother, my 3 uncles and my mother here in 1970-1971. My grandparents’ stories of hard work and success influenced my journey a great deal in that I am very self reliant and independent. My Mother is My hero. She immigrated to the UK for a. better life and more opportunities. she didn’t speak english. she worked hard, she was resilient, ended up speaking english fluently and raised 2 children. She sacrificed a lot.

My superhero is my mother, she is a strong minority woman who came over from Puerto Rico, speaking very little English, and became the epitome of philanthropy and success. I was born in Puerto Rico and came to California in my early years not speaking any English. My mom raised my brother and I And made sure that we knew English, understood the importance of education, understood the importance of giving back and most of all understood the importance of culture.
