DJ, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
I have three heroes that have shaped my journey. My grandfather, my grandmother and one of my best friends. Although all of them are no longer with us physically, their presence is still strong and greatly felt every single day.
My grandparents taught me determination and focus in everything I do, and to never give up until I succeed. My grandfather was a veteran that not only fought for this country, but also worked diligently to bring my grandmother, my 3 uncles and my mother here in 1970-1971. My grandparents’ stories of hard work and success influenced my journey a great deal in that I am very self reliant and independent. I exhaust all my efforts in everything I do to ensure I will succeed in all my endeavors.
My best friend, Mandy Blank, left us unexpectedly in October 2018, and since moving to Los Angeles in 2008, she has been one of my pillars of strength to get me through the toughest moments I’ve had, including becoming a mother in 2011 and raising my first born on my own. She taught me resilience and dedication, and she reinforced the determination and focus I almost lost, consistently reminding me that I can conquer every obstacle in my way.
With all three in my corner, and now my guardian angels, I am steadfast in everything I do, making sure all my endeavors are a tribute to them.
DJ, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The LA Rugby Club’s journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and sportsmanship. Known as the oldest Rugby Club in Los Angeles, from its inception in 1958, it has grown to become a cornerstone of the Los Angeles sports community, fostering a love for rugby across generations. The Youth Division’s establishment in 2018 marked a new chapter, introducing the sport to young enthusiasts and shaping the future of rugby in the region.
My involvement with LA Rugby Club’s Youth Division began in 2019. This has not only enriched my son’s athletic abilities and skills, but also contributed significantly to the club’s operations and camaraderie. Stepping into the Youth Director role in 2023, I’ve embraced the challenges and unpredictability of managing sports events, which is no small feat. My adaptability and commitment to the club have strengthened its foundation and expanded its reach within the Southern California Youth Rugby League. Serving on the Disciplinary Board is a clear indication of the respect and trust I’ve earned within the rugby community. My story is one of dedication, learning, and leadership, reflecting the core values that make rugby more than just a game, but a unifying force of family for all involved.
Outside of Rugby, I am employed in the IT industry as a Systems Analyst, focused on Database Systems integrations and AWS, ensuring seamless data management and cloud services.
Additionally, I am the silent partner of an event planning business, Kaylani Cupcake Events and Soirées, and “Momager” for my daughter’s acting/modeling appearances.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am an avid researcher, and I enjoy reading a great deal. Everything I read, see and hear, I absorb the most important details and pieces significant to me and apply it to my life.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I welcomed my son, my first child, in 2011, my life and career underwent a profound transformation. I was learning to navigate the challenges of being both a full-time mother and a full-time employee, all while embracing the journey of single motherhood. Every experience was uncharted territory for me, and with no one in my circle who had children of their own, I found myself figuring things out independently, especially since I had no immediate family nearby in Los Angeles. I quickly came to understand just how challenging it could be to manage everything alone, and that’s when my village began to emerge and expand.
One of my most significant breakthroughs came from Ms. Matè, the owner of French Crèche daycare. She had recently opened her doors in in Los Angeles, and at that time, she guided me through every milestone and detail concerning my son. The remark she made during my first visit to her daycare still resonates with me today—”Who you choose to care for your child at this stage is critical, as they will spend 80% of their time with them and only20 % with you.” This insight has become the foundation for all my decisions regarding both my children, influencing my choices about their companions, their school environments, and their extracurricular activities. It has undeniably shaped my approach to life and to my career.
