Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? So, we asked some very sharp folks to tell us the stories of how they came up with the names of their brands.
Tracee Murphy

Love this question! When I was a young child, I always noticed the TM (trademark) symbols on various toys/dolls. I – obviously – assumed that the TM was a personalization my parents added to my toys as they are my initials (Tracee Murphy). I believe I was about 7 or 8 when my dad broke my heart by telling me what the letters actually meant! From that point on, I always felt a deep connection to the name trademark. As I always had an entrepreneurial spirit, I decided at a young age that my future company was already named. Even before I knew it was for Interior Design! Read more>>

When thinking about branching out on my own, I knew that if I were to ever create my own design company that I would want it to have my name it in somewhere. Many times, you will see that women-owned businesses shy away from having their first names in their company name, as we often times want to appear ambiguous to the public. Because I offer a range of design services, I knew I wanted the company name to be present more as a collective so that is how I landed with StudioChardae. Read more>>

Choosing the right name was elusive for a long time. When I started the company, I envisioned it being part of a movement to change the definition of “beauty.” Creating truly clean, ultra luxurious bath and skin care products was really only supposed to be a vehicle to help women feel taken care of, listened to, and valuable. Our passion is clean beauty, but our purpose is to inspire women to be themselves, live their truth, and not waste time or energy comparing themselves to, or trying to become versions of what the media constantly tells us is “beautiful.” Read more>>

Okay I’ve been dying for someone to ask this question. So I was a junior in high school and around that time, Instagram was becoming very popular. Previously the only username I had ever had was “CupidClaudia” (yes, derived from the song “Cupid Shuffle”) for my Club Penguin account. I knew that wouldn’t fly as a 16 year old. I used the same method for my new handle, though. My favorite song at the time was “Suave” by Jerry Rivera. Read more>>

Branding has always been my passion because it is visual storytelling. I knew I wanted to tell a unique story with my brand, something inspiring, intriguing and emblematic of me as designer. Originally the name of my business was “Tanija Lynette Studios” but I wasn’t feeling that because I wanted something other than my name since I already used my name for my clothing brand. After some talks with my friend Roree, I came up with the name “The Lab Creative House”. I came up with the name because I wanted to be able to tell people that “I can’t talk right now, I’m in The Lab” lol and I wanted my clients to be able to say that they get their graphics done in “The Lab”, it just sounded cool. The creative house part was an add-on because I wanted the business to be a full creative agency or in this case a “creative house”. Read more>>

When my daughter was little, my parenting guidepost was, “What will enhance her vibrance?” That word has the elements of all of what matters to me—health, wellbeing, beauty, peace, happiness, frequency, vibration, elevation, consciousness, and magic. I built the restaurant as an extension of that way of raising my daughter and creating something for the world I wanted for her. There was no other word it could have been! Read more>>

I had been struggling for months trying to come up with a name for my business because I didn’t want to just use my name. I remember an exercise when I was in cosmetology school where we had to come up with a salon concept, business plan and name and none of those ideas worked either. Until one day I was sitting in church on Mother’s Day a few years back and the First Lady of our church spoke. The sermon was talking about how motherhood was just a “beautiful chaos,” and seeing how I’m a single mother of 3 teenage girls, it was a perfect fit. Read more>>

From Beverly Bakery was named after our grandma, Beverly, who taught us how to bake when we were younger. We miss our grandma so much and especially miss baking with her for special occasions. When deciding our bakery name, we thought of the idea of sharing our grandmas recipes and “from Beverly, through us, to our favorite people” popped into our heads. So this is now our mission. Every cake or sweet treat we share ultimately comes from Beverly. With lots of love from us of course! Read more>>

When we set out to find the perfect building for a wedding venue in Texas, we had no idea what to expect. The only requirements we had were to make sure the building had character, was in a good location and that it would be different from anything else. After doing some wandering in nearby small towns, we caught wind of an old historic building in La Grange that was once an old ice factory dating back to the late 1800’s. Through the decades businesses came and went and layer after layer of paint, Read more>>

Coming up with the appropriate business name is always one of the most difficult things starting off. Funny story. I love naming things after myself. In my last 9-5 our VP was obsessed with the strengths finder. My #1 strength is Maximizer. It fit me to a tee. It made me believe that the assessment had some truth in how we operate as people. A lot of folks assume that the ‘moon’ half of MARVEL + MOON is in reference to that dreamy celestial orb in the night sky but I choose moon with its other definition in mind: to spend time idly or to sentimentalize or remember nostalgically. Candles promote ‘slow living.’ They call for pause and reflection. I relish in the act of lighting the wick, watching the glow, savoring the fragrance. Read more>>

It all started in 2006. At that time, I was a 19 years old discovering who I was. Prior to that, I was a nerdy kid that got bullied verbally and physically from time to time. So, in order to control the hate that I had and to build my confidence, my late father suggested that I take self-defense classes. I remember walking to the nearest martial arts school that I could find, which was John Wai Martial Arts Academy. Read more>>
