Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Jessica D. Winder, a working mama of twin daughters, author, renowned keynote speaker, and career coach. I began my career by pioneering HR initiatives at several companies, enhancing talent acquisition, performance management, and diversity and inclusion. As the founder of Hidden Gem Career Coaching, I authored “The Hidden Gem Within” to support career development. Through the Hidden Gem Newsletter, Talent Destination Podcast, and LinkedIn content, I reach a broad audience, advocating for leadership development and positive change. My mission is to empower individuals and organizations to unlock their full potential.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve faced numerous challenges along the way. Balancing my career with raising twin daughters has been demanding. In my professional journey, being the first HR executive at multiple companies required navigating uncharted territories and establishing foundational HR practices from scratch. Implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives often met resistance, and driving cultural change demanded persistent effort and strategic communication. Additionally, maintaining work-life balance while pushing for organizational transformation and personal growth has been a continuous struggle. Despite these challenges, each obstacle has strengthened my resolve and honed my skills, contributing to my success today.

Hidden Gem Career Coaching, which I launched in 2020, was born out of a passion to tackle workplace inequality head-on. My mission is to be the Robin Hood for job seekers from underrepresented groups, championing their cause at every career crossroads. Flying solo, I offer a variety of services, including resume writing, career coaching, and mentoring, all delivered with a mix of sass and solidarity.
What sets Hidden Gem Career Coaching apart is my unique approach that digs deep into your past and future to showcase your unique abilities. With my expertise in DE&I, leadership development, and project management, I help Professionals of Color reach new heights and stand out to potential employers.
I’m particularly proud of my commitment to passion and social justice. My services are designed to ensure that companies see you not just as a “culture fit” but as a “culture add.”
As a working mama to twins, Navy Rose and Savannah Grace, I understand the unique challenges of balancing career aspirations with family responsibilities. As a professional who has experienced the challenges of career transitions firsthand, including layoffs, I understand the importance of providing support and resources to individuals navigating these difficult times. I am passionate about helping students and graduates who are joining or reentering the workforce.

A career-focused journal titled “The Hidden Gem Within,” designed to help individuals reflect on their strengths, goals, and experiences during career transitions.
A course called “Leveraging HR Expert Advice to Ace Your Interviews,” which provides insights and strategies to help job seekers stand out in the interview process.
A virtual training session on Mastering Workplace Boundaries, co-hosted with my colleague Kirsten Larsen, scheduled for June 20th at 10 AM PST. This session aims to equip both leaders and employees with the tools to establish healthy working relationships from the start of a new job.
