Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Adell
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Ebony Adell, International Sustainable Luxury Designer, Protest Artist, Author, Mother, Educator and Yogi. I’ve always loved the arts. Theater, music, literature, dance, painting and fashion were a huge part of my lived experience.
I can’t think of a time that I wasn’t different. I didn’t look like everybody else, talk like everybody else or dress like everybody else. I never really fit all the way in. Never quite urban or black enough and too black to be Native American; never really fit into anyone’s aesthetic box of whatever there stereotypical expectation was of me as a person of color. Both my parents are artistic. My dad is also an artist, Eccentric to the point he could do everything besides literature and clothes because he didn’t have the patience for the process. He paints, draws, etches glass, carpentry, play instruments, sing and dance. So he loved to do my hair in really intricate hairstyles like an African and Indian princess, he was down when I wanted to have a singing group, hip hop group when I was a rapper so he always told me I could make it. My parents dressed me really pretty and preppy, like Paris chic and I attended Catholic school from kindergarten to eighth grade; St John DeNepomuc and Bruce Guadalupe both in Milwaukee. My mother is a fashionista with a balance of the analytical and creative sides. The final boss, she can out-King a King. The only things she didn’t do was sing and play instruments but that is replaced with logic and analytics. Kept us loved, fresh, well rounded; an interior decorator, artist, painter with financial acumen and fine as wine. She kept me at lavish events, balls, business luncheons, Ebony Fashion Fair and Spiegel. She started taking me to Ebony Fashion Fair Fashion Shows when I was a little girl and we were always close enough to touch those ladies. Close enough to see myself on the runway. I was hooked on the idea of being a part of that way back then.
My parents taught me I could be and do anything. Both college educated, my dad was a veteran so it was minimum requirement I had to get at least one BA, credentials so I always have to have a backup, connect my studies to the dream, hustle and work while I’m manifesting my dream. So once I say I’m going to do something I’m going to do it, because I know I can. When I decided in 2002 I was going to go hard on my fashion I had already been slowly developing the idea of bringing the chakras into the world in a physical way. I knew once I started really practicing my tantra and yoga and meditation and deep study of chakras that I could have a positive impact on the collective world community through the fashion platform. I was learning about sustainable fashion and that there was an opening in the market specifically for what I wanted to do.
I took some business classes first, tested some ideas on my online tantra clients, worked with some up and coming brands and decided I was going for it. I made some action plans and stuff and decided to take it the level I wanted to go I had to go to school. In order to position myself in the industry I felt I need all the information so I went to Mount Mary University and got a degree, built the brand through assignments and projects and kept it moving. Then I went online and got Certification in Luxury Brand Management, Creation of Artifacts, Marketing to support my degree and keep me current. I attended WWDMagic tradeshows as education when I couldn’t afford to go back to college early on but the more I immersed myself in the industry the more I knew the idea was a real attainable thing for me. I don’t think i ever thought the idea would NOT be successful, I just didn’t know how long it would take or that it would be this evolved in 2024. My dream was just to show in Paris. But due to the pandemic I ended up shoeing in London instead. However it was the best experience in my life outside of my family stuff and degree. There is a level of professionalism, exposure, PR and just respect for me and what I do it made ME respect it more.
I founded brand Tantric Sex Design House in 2002 based on tantric yoga . We have 3 online stores, TSXDH, Chakrasana and a developing accessories only store TSX3DesignHouse on Etsy. The co-brands have followed throughout the years as I added new products and services that didn’t fit under the category of “fashion.” i was always an artist and had incorporated that part into the brand through the product development process but the actual business of art, LLeda Artifacts wasn’t official until 2020, Yoga Yance and Chakra Dance and The Chakra Activation Seminar officially were under the brand in 2019 and SxEyecon which is the nook series came out in 2018. The literature part is still in development as I am writing the stories.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. But I don’t have professional regrets as much as personal ones. I’ve lost lots of relationships, friendships and family members on my journey. The hardest thing about success for me has been leaving people behind and letting go of the fantasy of what success looks like. When I was younger I thought it was just about reaching this monetary goal through my
purpose and when that wasn’t happening and I was not seeing the fruits of my labor I would get discouraged sowing seeds of doubt. I was blocking my manifestations from fully coming to fruition and disturbing my vibrational reality, just kept on creating and making and showing up. Then I started to see a different type of validity. A real respect for my work.
Traveling and trying other markets was scary at first, Going back and forth between Miami, Atlanta and LA throughout the year can be tedious but I’m blessed to be booked and busy. It’s all really preparing me for what’s to come so I will happily grind it out until there’s nothing left not even a crumb.
Other than God and lots of prayer, London Fashion Week is what really set the current pace of my career. I owe a huge part of the success of my showcase to Tiffany and Carl at Oxford Fashion Studio. They believed in me during a time when I really didn’t know what was going to happen with the world(during Covid). But It was their support and encouragement along with my family that gave me the final mental push to take the risk and go to London alone during Covid and make my big move. I had to live my mantras and be grateful for the opportunity instead of fearful of the circumstances. I scraped and scrounged for 2 years to raise the money for the showcase itself, travel/lodging/food/transportation, the cost of the actual collection and I had to like survive and support my kids. I wasn’t working for a large amount of that time due to the pandemic and immersed myself in making.
Right now the most crucial issue is the geopolitical state of the world. As an activist I have to assess if what I’m doing stands for what I’m currently fighting for. For instance we are literally fighting to maintain our current format of government. I’m not even talking about the other stuff, just to maintain the setup. We are fighting to maintain the most basic of civil rights so I have to The current civil unrest, political discourse and multiple ongoing wars pause any plans of going over seas until I feel that it’s safe for me to travel. I learned my lesson in 2021 during Covid when I launched at London Fashion Week. I have to be financially stable to try and do business overeas during a conflict, I don’t want to take the chance of getting stuck anywhere; plus some of my work is controversial. Sustainability is more than just a hot button issue right now. One side sees a person like me as the enemy because I’m an agent of change. So the most important thing I can do for the mission is to make sure I still have a voice in the fight. I have to make sure that my work and my brand stays an authentic reflection of my role as an artist in the struggle.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
TSX Design House is an international sustainable luxury brand founded in chakras and tantric principles. Our mission is to counter socio-environmental oppression and environmental racism. We provide luxury sustainable clothes, accessories and offer services like yoga, meditation and chakra activation.
I specialize in bringing the chakras to the 3 dimensional reality and activating the chakras of the consumer through the clothes, accessories, art and yoga. Sustainability and sustaining the planet, the community and the collective mental are all a part of the ahimsa yoga principles.
TSX Design House is known for being a circular brand. Collections known for the 3d chakra concepts, dynamic fashion show experiences that are fashion meditations or visual mantras, prints, art to wear, motion in the fabrics, art to wear and the brand messaging.
What I’m most proud of right now in 2024 is the expansion of my art brand LLeda Artifacts and the expansion of our online presence. 24fashionTV(https://24fashion.tv/Video/tsx-design-house-ss-2022-london-fashion-week-2021-279052) just reshared my SS2022 London Fashion Week show Transcend8 and we hit over 305,000 views. That’s a major milestonefor the brand. To think about that many other humans laying eyes on my work took my breath away. But we’re not just online, the art has been exhibiting in galleries in Miami, Dubai, New York, Spain, Germany, and Italy for the 2024 Biennale di Venezia.
This brand is not just transactional. Yes we do want to be profitable but we also want to make sure that the experience with the brand is aspirational and transformational. Consumers who vibrate on the same frequency will gravitate towards TSXDH brand regardless of location, gender, race, religion or average income. That’s what sets me apart from others. Some people will read never read the books, or do the yoga or wear the clothes. Others will look at the art and instantly understand on a subconcious level and others won’t like it or ever understand and that’s ok too.
What’s next?
In 2025 we’ll be adding a home childcare center to the brand umbrella called LLeda Elite Art Academy. It is a montesorri style home daycare with a STEAM focus on the curriculum. My 9-5 as a teacher the last 13 years has shown me there is a need within the community for that type of provider.
Our next big show goes LIVE in October for International Digital Fashion Week with FNL Network. I have really come to love shooting my fashion films. This will be our 3rd season and I have some new cameras, locations and concepts. A new concept that takes us into the 6th dimension of chakras and explores the power of the connectiveness of our paths. I tapped into my African and Native American and cultural heritage for what I feel is my most powerful imagery. Never before seen paintings will be released along with some other new elements premiere this year too so I’m excited.
I’ve also added to my face mask sculpture series. In addition to C19 and Universal Mother I have added about 6 new sculptures to the family.
Readers should be looking out for a big amp up in content on all my platforms and updates in the stores and 3d jewelry collections. We re really getting into our marketing bag and organizing. More yoga offerings, pop ups in different states and more. To build up our local presence we’re doing a Cos {;ay Couture Gala and sponsoring/vending The Puerto Rican Festival in Milwaukee.
For now, Dubai and London are on hold. Sometimes they offer for me to send my clothes and art galleries want me to send my art instead of digitally but the insurance is so expensive it’s more than it would cost for me to go in person. Honestly everything really depends on what happens with this next election and the state of the the US. While I’m doing this, I also have to take time to prepare for any shenanigans leading up to or after this election. I’m going to make sure I do the simplest thing I can to participate in the democratic process while we still got it and vote early, Planning and positioning is what can determine whether we sink or swim. Covid was one thing but this is a different type of beast and I don’t know what happens next. I hear all this talk about The Fall of An Empire but people miss the other piece to that; from the ashes comes a new collective democracy.
