Earning that first dollar is incredibly special and a moment many never forget. We asked some very talented creatives from the community to tell us the story of the first dollar they earned from their creative works.
Asli Ozok

As an art student at the academy, I began developing my own unique style. However, I faced significant skepticism; even my tutor dismissed my work, claiming it wasn’t “real art.” Undeterred, I continued to pursue my vision. An unexpected opportunity arose when Accenture, a major American company, opened a large office in the new towers and organized an art competition. The jury consisted entirely of foreign art professionals, offering a fresh perspective on artistic merit. Secretly, without telling anyone, I submitted my paintings to the competition. Our first show ever was at Dee’s Lounge, a special place for us that helped craft our sound and vision for this project. We made $80 from ticket sales at that show and though it wasn’t much, it helped fuel the fire that started burning for us this past summer. Both of us have been musicians for a while, so we know how grueling of an industry it can be. Years of no’s and empty shows can make you jaded. But the feeling of buying ourselves burritos from the Mexican grocery store down the street with the money we earned playing our original music for the first time was exhilarating. Read more>>

The story of my first dollar earned through creativity begins way before the actual transaction. It really begins with a challenge. My mother recognized my interest in art and my dedication to bettering my craft. She advocated that my skills should be nurtured at Colonial Middle school and then Overton High School. Their Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) programs provided me with tools and techniques that could be applied in several ways. They also enlisted students in art competitions and after participating for years, I finally won. It took place at the Memphis Airport Competition in 2016, I didn’t place 1st in the competition but the confidence I won was much greater than that. My submission was purchased through the competition and it felt like a door had opened right in front of me. At a time where I was contemplating what to do with my life, I’m presented with an opportunity to follow my creative voice and It leads to my first art sale. This day forced me to consider clinging to creativity as I live my life. Read more>>
