Hi Orazie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

My journey began with a passion for animals and a deep empathy for survivors of domestic violence. I spent significant time volunteering at a domestic violence shelter, where I witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking decisions survivors had to make. Many returned to their abusers out of concern for their pets’ safety or for the comfort their pets provided. This experience profoundly impacted me.

Additionally, while volunteering at the Atlanta Humane Society, I saw another devastating consequence of unstable housing for survivors – they often had to give up ownership of their beloved pets. These experiences underscored the urgent need for a solution that would allow survivors to keep their pets, which are often their only source of unconditional love and support.

Motivated by these experiences, I founded Praline’s Backyard Foundation. Our mission is to bridge the gap between animal welfare and domestic violence support by offering safe housing for pets of survivors. We partner with pet boarding facilities and recruit pet fosters to ensure that no survivor has to choose between their safety and their pet’s well-being. Through these efforts, we aim to provide a holistic support system that empowers survivors to make a safe and confident transition away from abuse.

Today, I’m proud of how far we’ve come and the impact we’ve made. But there’s always more work to do, and I’m committed to expanding our reach and resources to help as many survivors and their pets as possible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Starting a foundation that addresses the intersection of animal welfare and domestic violence posed unique challenges from the beginning. One of the major struggles was raising awareness about the critical link between pets and domestic violence. Many people were unaware that pets could be a significant barrier to leaving an abusive situation.

Securing funding was another hurdle. While people were sympathetic to our cause, translating that sympathy into consistent financial support took time and persistent effort. We had to continuously educate potential donors and partners on the importance of our work and the impact it could have on both survivors and their pets.

Finding suitable partners, such as pet boarding facilities and foster homes, also proved challenging. Many facilities were hesitant to commit to providing space for pets without understanding the full scope of our mission. It took a lot of outreach and relationship-building to create a network of supportive partners who were willing to help.

Additionally, ensuring the safety and well-being of the pets while maintaining the confidentiality and security of the survivors added layers of complexity to our operations. We had to develop protocols and partnerships that could handle these sensitive issues effectively.

Despite these obstacles, the determination to provide a safe haven for pets keeps us going. Each challenge reinforced the importance of our mission and motivated us to find innovative solutions. The support from the community, the resilience of the survivors, and the love for the animals have been our driving force in overcoming these struggles.
