Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachal Duggan
Hi Rachal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my start by first attending art school in Chicago at Columbia College. After getting more into the practice of illustration, I worked full-time jobs while also freelancing as an Illustrator.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say that my road to full-time illustration has been very interesting. After over a decade of working miscellaneous full-time jobs in marketing, event planning, and social media, I finally began working for myself without another job as my safety net. I think something that I’ve learned (the hard way) is that there’s not always one big career-changing moment. Or, maybe there is for some people but not all! Over the years I’ve had incredible opportunities come my way and they always felt like a pivotal moment in my career. However, I’ve come to realize those moments are a part of a bigger picture. I’ve never had my “big break” so-to-speak. Instead, I’ve had a pretty long winding road but ultimately, I am still here drawing so it’s all working in its own way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in simple black and white illustrations. Sometimes, with a pop of color. I’m most known for my booty portraits (yes, I draw butts). I pop-up at private events like weddings and public markets where I draw booty portraits on the spot. It’s quick, it’s painless, and it’s actually fun!
In terms of what I am most proud of, I’m really proud that I still continue to draw every day. That has been a mantra of mine since I was first getting my start. I told myself, if I keep drawing and keep working at it, things will click for me. And, I’m very happy to say that they have. I don’t want to only draw for money. I need to also draw for myself.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Looking back at my childhood, I remember making hand-drawn board games with my dad and brother. We’d have to use our imagination to come up with a concept and then we’d just make stuff. There was no wrong way to do it. We’d use random cardboard and markers and crayons and paper. I think doing activities like that really opened my brain to the possibilities of being thrifty and creative. You can make something out of nothing.
