Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Savela
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. I moved to New York in 2021 to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Midtown, Manhattan. Here I trained as an actress as well as pursuing other artistic avenues. I graduated in 2023 completing an AOS degree. I was then selected for AADA’s advanced training company which I completed early this year. Following graduation I signed with Webb Sweeney Murphy Talent.
Growing up, I played every sport from Soccer to Basketball to Softball to Volleyball before finally landing on Track and Field, and more specifically Javelin. After throwing Javelin for 9 years, competing Nationally 4x, and placing 3rd overall in Canada, I retired in pursuit of my true passion. The arts had always called to me, having studied Guitar, Bass, Piano and Vocal arts, but in 2018 I really found my love for Acting.
My selected credits include ‘Maggie’ in the new play ¡Someone ExtraordinariX! by Poli Olavarria, ‘Love’ in Everybody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, originating the character of ‘Magpie’ in Hearts Like Planets by Adam Szymkowicz, and Viola in Twelfth Night directed by Vanessa Morosco.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been incredibly lucky to have an amazing support system. My parents are so wonderful and though they do no always understand the artistic side of things the believe in me and encourage me to follow my dreams, and that is a real privilege. I worked hard and was accepted to a dream school in 2020 during my senior year of high-school. Due to to pandemic I had to defer my start date to Fall 2021. While this year off was ultimately a blessing, it was very difficult and frustrating. I now have an incredible supportive network of friends and creative professionals, but inter personal relationships are always challenging, especially in a business such as acting.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actress, singer, producer and model. I have acted in many plays including the upcoming show I am producing and staring in as ‘Maggie’; ¡Someone ExtraordinariX!. I produced and acted in this show back in June 2023 and the 3 night run was sold out. Now the show has been picked up by the Players Theatre in downtown Manhattan for a three week run May 1st – May 18th. It is the most creatively fulfilling piece I have had the privilege of working on and helping to bring to the stage. It is such a privilege to share that stage with Poli Olavarria as Mona, Vincent Rame as Vicho, and Paige Hapeman as Someone.
I am so proud of my theatrical resume and bring myself to everything I do. Another incredibly filling project was playing Love in Branden Jacobs Jenkins on play Everybody. It quickly became one of my favourite plays and text I will frequently revisit. Also originating the role of Magpie in the new play Hearts Like Planets by Adam Szymcowikz, this is soon to be published.
I love to sing and strum my guitar. Music is hopefully going to take a forefront in my career in the upcoming year. I have to record more music as I am finally writing more music.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is setting and accomplishing goals. Being flexible and realistic but never giving up on the dream. Success is creating art with people you admire. Success is getting to spend your time creating things that are fun and mean something. Success is being a part of professional productions.
