Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Napoleon
Hi Don, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in the picturesque town of Nyack, New York, where I was born to Haitian immigrant parents whose dreams and sacrifices laid the foundation for my future. Raised in New Jersey, I attended a Catholic boys’ high school, an experience that instilled in me values of discipline and brotherhood. It was at Virginia State University, where I graduated with a degree in psychology and a minor in mass communications and English, that my passion for storytelling truly began to take shape.
During my college years, I became captivated by documentary storytelling, drawn to its power to shed light on stories that matter. This interest led me to join Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where I found a supportive network of like-minded individuals who encouraged my creative pursuits. My career began at NBC News, where I immersed myself in the fast-paced world of broadcast journalism. This foundational experience was followed by a role at a prominent marketing firm in New York, where I further refined my skills in crafting compelling narratives. The next chapter of my journey took me to production companies in Washington, D.C., where I had the privilege of working on a diverse range of projects. From the dramatic marches on Capitol Hill to the intricate details of high-stakes hearings, my work has spanned a spectrum of influential events and stories.
These experiences culminated in the creation of the Napoleon Complex Project, a dedicated platform for documentary storytelling. With this venture, I have focused on producing and directing stories that delve into the heart of various industries—small businesses, government agencies, entertainment, and sports. My work captures the essence of the human experience, from the grassroots level to the grandeur of major events like the Super Bowl, bringing to light narratives that resonate and make an impact.
Through the Napoleon Complex Project, I continue to explore and document the stories that shape our world, blending my background in journalism with a passion for storytelling to illuminate the voices and events that matter most.
Today, after over 20 years of running my own production company, I am honored to have been hired by the D.C. Film Commission. In this role, I assist with the permitting process for major films shot in washington, dc and I manage special events throughout the city, further integrating my expertise into the fabric of Washington’s vibrant media landscape. Additionally, I continue to support BBC News as a floor manager, a position I have held for 12 to 14 years. Each of these roles has profoundly shaped who I am today, reflecting a career dedicated to storytelling and a commitment to capturing the stories that define our world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My career in journalism and documentary filmmaking has been anything but a smooth, linear path. Leaving NBC News marked the beginning of a challenging yet transformative journey. I initially thought that moving to New York City would be a straightforward transition, but the reality was far more complex. As I navigated various media roles, I encountered a range of experiences—some lucrative, others steeped in valuable lessons.
Among the significant hurdles were the instances where key decisions led to losing contracts with TV networks and organizations or facing issues with payment. Such experiences underscored the importance of aligning with clients who truly value and respect the work. These setbacks, while disheartening, made it clear which clients would no longer be part of my professional roster, shaping my approach to future partnerships.
Each position, whether it came with financial rewards or difficult setbacks, was instrumental in shaping my career. The struggles of securing contracts and the occasional setbacks, including being let go from certain roles, were not just obstacles but essential parts of my growth. These experiences, spanning from New York to Washington, D.C., have served as stepping stones, guiding me through the intricacies of the media landscape.
Every challenge and every success has contributed to my story, enriching my journey and reinforcing my commitment to storytelling. Through it all, I have learned that the road may be winding and unpredictable, but each twist and turn is a vital chapter in the narrative of my professional life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my daily role as the leader and visionary director of The Napoleon Complex Project, I am deeply immersed in the creative process, which is where my passion truly lies. My work is all about harnessing the power of storytelling to make a meaningful impact on the world. Each day, I lead a team of exceptionally talented individuals—what I like to call my “Jedi” squad—whose creative prowess and dedication bring our ambitious projects to life. My role involves spearheading and planning, ensuring that every production aligns with our vision to craft stories that have the potential to change lives. I know each crew member’s unique skill set, allowing me to delegate tasks effectively and maximize our collective creative output.
Previously, my experience as a fixer for documentary crews in Washington, D.C., honed my skills in navigating the city’s complex landscape. I helped filmmakers secure permits, find ideal shooting locations, and manage logistics, which eventually led me to a pivotal role at the DC Film Commission. There, I leveraged my background to facilitate feature film productions, offering support in permitting and creative planning for events across the city.
My tenure at BBC News as a floor manager for election nights and daily newscasts over the past 12-14 years has refined my ability to support high-stakes environments. I work closely with the news director, serving as their eyes and ears in the studio, ensuring that every broadcast runs smoothly and effectively.
In addition to my professional roles, my wife and I co-lead the Exposure Media Project DC, a non-profit initiative designed to provide HBCU and small college mass communications students with valuable tours and internship opportunities. This program reflects our commitment to nurturing the next generation of media professionals and fostering diversity in the industry.
What I find most fulfilling is that none of this feels like work. It’s a blend of passion and purpose—helping clients tell compelling stories, guiding creative teams to achieve their best work, and contributing to meaningful projects and causes. This is what drives me and makes every day invigorating and rewarding.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I first met James Brown at the beginning of my career in Washington, D.C., when he was the Director of the Office of Cable Television and Film in the early 2000s. At that pivotal time, his guidance and mentorship have profoundly shaped my professional journey. I vividly recall a moment when, while working on contracts under his direction, I suggested for him to consider me as a role as a producer at the agency he directed. His response was a defining moment for me: he advised me to seek broader experiences, to travel, and to immerse myself in the world of production to truly excel.
James’s encouragement to venture out and gain diverse experiences was instrumental in shaping my career path. His wisdom and support have been a constant source of inspiration and direction. Fast forward 20 years, and when I faced a crucial turning point and felt as though I had hit a glass ceiling, James once again played a crucial role. He recommended that I consider a position with the DC Film Commission—the very agency he once led. His advice was a full-circle moment, reminding me of the profound impact his mentorship has had on my career.
James Brown’s belief in my potential and his insightful guidance have been invaluable throughout my journey. His influence has been a cornerstone in shaping who I am today and what I strive to achieve in my professional life.
