Today we’d like to introduce you to Aziz Olivine.
Hi Aziz, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A lot of my inspiration for my current work comes from my childhood and the feeling of being an alien in every space I was in. I’m Palestinian-American, so growing up caught between two contrasting cultures was confusing and exhausting. Like a lot of people in my generation, I used the internet as my refuge and was chronically online from childhood into my teen years. I learned that I could create online spaces where I could truly express myself, and ever since, I’ve been creating and sharing in the digital space. I started with a small business called Celadon Slimes, where I sold sensory products, but eventually, I wanted a more personal outlet for expression. So, I taught myself how to produce music, and I’ve been making music ever since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth or easy ride for me as an independent artist, because being an artist is mostly a spiritual journey. Becoming aware of your weaknesses and the more difficult parts of yourself can be exhausting, but it’s also a portal to becoming the best version of yourself. While self-awareness is necessary, the goal is to learn about yourself and love yourself—even with your dark side. Beyond that, having the discipline to show up for myself on days when I’m exhausted and don’t feel like creating has been a challenge. Adjusting my life so I have more energy is a constant journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Right now, my work is mostly independent—I produce, mix, and master my own music. I’m primarily a vocalist, but teaching myself how to produce and mix has expanded my horizons, and I’ve been loving the process of creating for both myself and others. Genre-wise, I specialize in ambient/alternative pop and R&B. I have a special interest in crafting intimate atmospheres that allow me to express the vulnerability and playfulness that I don’t always show in my waking life. Music has always been an escape for me, so my intention is to create unique, healing spaces that others can feel comfortable bringing into their own worlds.
What matters most to you? Why?
Living authentically is my main priority. Seeing so much lack of authenticity in the world around me, I don’t want to create from a place of desperation. I want my art to be intentional, free from the pressure to monetize or self-benefit. I’m human, so of course, I have those desires—but part of my journey is learning to let go of them, little by little.
