Today we’d like to introduce you to Princessa S. Williams
Hi Princessa S., please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For many years, I’ve heard that writing down your goals can bring them into reality. At 12, I decided to give it a shot. I pulled out my journal and penned my aspirations. One memorable goal was, “I will own a store by age 30.” I vividly recall tearing out that page and stowing it away. In my early 20’s, I stumbled upon that journal entry, flashing a smile but not dwelling on it.
Throughout my 20’s, I sold handmade jewelry and painted art at events, gradually taking my craft more seriously. Selling my first canvas spurred me on; if I could sell one piece, why not more? I expanded, showcasing my work in galleries, renting venues, teaching large paint classes, and traveling to art shows.
By age 30, I sought a permanent workspace and found the perfect spot on 1271 Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, NY. The Covid-19 pandemic threw a wrench into my plans, but I used the time to transform a 2,200 square foot space into Princessa’s Studio & Art Gallery. When I finally held the keys, it hit me: that 12-year-old dreamer, guided by faith, had manifested her goal.
Today, I’m entering my 4th year in business. I teach art at Villa Maria College and Buffalo Public Schools, host paint classes, create murals across Erie and Niagara County, and continue to exhibit and engage with various arts organizations. I’ve built a platform to mentor young artists, bridging gaps I faced in my youth, helping them exhibit globally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening my business during the pandemic presented additional challenges due to new world regulations. However, amidst these hurdles, there was a pivotal moment where I courageously turned my passion into my daily pursuit. I didn’t hesitate. With unwavering determination, I chased my dream of owning an Art Gallery. I am proud that I persevered in pursuing what truly brings me joy. Today, I have no regrets about embracing this path.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Princessa’s Studio & Art Gallery?
My name is Princessa S. Williams, CEO of Princessa’s Studio & Art Gallery (PSAG), where I’ve proudly operated for nearly 4 years. Art has been my passion for over 20 years, and since founding PSAG, I’ve been deeply involved in community art. Teaching art classes of all ages at the gallery brings me immense pride, alongside my role as an Adjunct Professor at Villa Maria College, where I teach 2D Design. I actively participate in art shows, showcase my skills as a muralist, and mentor emerging artists in the industry.
Recently, I’ve published my own BIPOC coloring book/journal where I talk about self love, practicing good habits and eating habits, fitness, and money goals.
From a young age, art has been my unwavering passion, nurtured by my mother, an artist herself, who provided me with sketch pads and materials to practice. While I’ve held various jobs that enriched my life, art has always been my true calling.
What sets me apart is being the sole Female Afro-Latina Millennial Art Gallery owner in this region. I take great pride in my brand and achievements, particularly as a woman of color and millennial who navigated the challenges of the pandemic to build my business.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Whenever you decide to go into business, that itself is a risk. For me, I stepped out on faith and I let everything go into God‘s hands.
