James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

It all started at the SF SPCA, where I embarked on an internship that would lay the foundation for my future. My experience there was focused on positive reinforcement dog training and community engagement. While at the SF SPCA, I spearheaded a ‘Pitbull’ program, achieving a 300% increase in adoptions in my first year. I extended my work to the Community Cares Team where I helped provide free dog training to underserved communities in San Francisco. This approach not only enhanced the lives of dogs and their families but also strengthened community bonds. This work with the SF SPCA eventually led to a full-time position as a behavior specialist and fueled my desire to make a difference in the lives of dogs and their owners. This passion, advocacy, and commitment to care drove me to establish primepaw about nine years ago, with a singular mission: to provide the highest quality positive reinforcement care for dogs and to enhance the human-animal bond through positive reinforcement training.

What began as a humble solo venture in dog walking and training has now blossomed into primepaw today—a dynamic operation offering a wide array of services tailored to dogs of all ages and behaviors from puppies, adolescents, to reactivity and aggression. The journey of primepaw is one of passion, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of the dog community. Today, primepaw stands as a testament to what can be achieved through passion, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

One of the most significant challenges came in January 2020, just as we were poised for expansion. We had signed a lease for a new space, ready to elevate our services in January 2020. Then the world shut down due to COVID-19. The pandemic tested us in ways we could never have anticipated. The timing of our expansion seemed ill-fated, but it also became a turning point for us to continue our journey and to push through the struggles.

In addition to the external challenges, we faced internal struggles as well. Our systems, designed to support high-level operations, often fell short, leading to setbacks that required constant adjustments. In May of 2024, primepaw faced an unimaginable tragedy when a fatal accident concerning a puppy occured at our facility. This devastating incident shook our team, clients, and community to the core. As a multifaceted positive reinforcement dog training facility, we are dedicated to the well being and safety of both animals and people, making this loss deeply personal and profoundly impactful. Despite immense grief and challenges that followed, this moment of hardship became a turning point for our team. It spurred us to reflect, learn, and grow stronger together. The adversity we faced became a catalyst for unity, resilience, and renewal.

We believe that every challenge is an opportunity for growth, and it is this belief that has driven us to continuously improve, adapt, and strive for excellence. What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned on our journey as a dog training company is that our greatest growth has come from our failures. At primepaw, we’ve embraced the concept of “fail fast, fail often.” This philosophy has allowed us to continuously evolve, adapting to challenges and setbacks with resilience. By fostering a culture that values input from our team and community, we’ve been able to listen, learn, and improve at every step.

This approach has not only strengthened our team and culture but also deepened our connection with the dog community we serve. Each failure has been an opportunity for us to refine our methods, ensuring that we provide the highest quality training and support to our clients. Through these experiences, we’ve built a company that is not only committed to positive reinforcement but also to continuous growth and improvement, making primepaw a trusted and dynamic resource for dog owners in San Francisco, as well as the surrounding Bay Area.
