Hi Dr. Chakika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

My journey into the world of aesthetics began with a passion for helping people feel confident in their own skin. As an African American woman, I saw a lack of representation and inclusivity in the medical aesthetics industry, particularly for Black and Brown individuals. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and founded SkyRose Rejuvenation Clinic & Spa.

At SkyRose, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of services, from weight loss management to Botox, fillers, and IV hydration. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to understanding the unique needs of diverse skin tones and body types. We believe that everyone deserves personalized care that caters to their individuality, and we’re passionate about delivering just that.

Over time, my passion for inclusivity grew beyond the spa and into education. That’s why I started my Medical Aesthetics Academy—to mentor and train other Black and Brown providers who want to break into the aesthetics industry. Our academy’s mission is simple: to give future providers the skills and knowledge they need to thrive, while also creating a more inclusive industry for all.

I’m incredibly proud of the community we’ve built, both at the spa and through the academy. Recently, we were honored to receive the iHeart Brilliantly Black Business Award, a testament to the impact we’re making in the world of aesthetics and beyond. My goal is to keep pushing boundaries, offering top-notch care to our clients, and empowering others to follow their dreams in this industry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

The road hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has shaped who I am today and strengthened my vision for SkyRose Rejuvenation Clinic & Spa. Starting a business in the medical aesthetics field as a Black woman came with its own unique hurdles. I quickly realized that there was a significant lack of representation in the industry, which sometimes made it hard to find my footing. I had to work twice as hard to prove myself, not just as a business owner but as someone who could succeed in an industry that traditionally hadn’t made room for people who looked like me.

One of the biggest struggles was breaking through the misconceptions that skincare and aesthetic treatments were only meant for certain types of people. Educating my community about the benefits of treatments like Botox, fillers, and weight management for diverse skin tones and body types was a challenge, but one that I welcomed. I wanted to make sure that every person who walked through our doors felt seen, heard, and catered to.

Another challenge was balancing growth with maintaining the personal touch that’s at the heart of SkyRose. As we expanded, both with the medspa and through the academy, it was crucial to keep our core values of inclusivity, education, and empowerment alive.

There have been moments of self-doubt and obstacles that seemed insurmountable, but each one made me more resilient and more committed to the vision. These struggles pushed me to not only elevate my business but also to mentor and empower others through the Medical Aesthetics Academy.

The journey has been anything but smooth, but every bump in the road has led to greater success. Today, we’re thriving, and the impact we’re making—especially after winning the iHeart Brilliantly Black Business Award—is proof that perseverance pays off.

Who else deserves credit in your story?

I wouldn’t be where I am today without an incredible support system that has stood by me through every step of this journey. First and foremost, I have to give credit to my family, who have always believed in my vision, even during the toughest moments. Their love and encouragement gave me the strength to push forward and dream big, even when the road wasn’t easy.

I’ve also been blessed to have amazing mentors who guided me through the complexities of the aesthetics industry and business ownership. These mentors Specificaly Dr. Kiiyonna Jones helped me refine my skills, navigate challenges, and keep my eyes on the bigger picture. Their wisdom has been invaluable, not only in building SkyRose Rejuvenation Clinic & Spa but in launching the Medical Aesthetics Academy as well. I truly couldn’t have done it without their insight and experience.

My team at SkyRose deserves special recognition, too. They are the heartbeat of the clinic, and their dedication to providing top-notch care to our clients is unmatched. Each member of my team brings passion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to making our clients feel beautiful and confident. They’ve helped shape SkyRose into the welcoming, inclusive space that it is today.

And then, of course, there are our incredible clients. Without their trust and loyalty, none of this would be possible. I’m forever grateful to each client who has walked through our doors, supported our mission, and shared their stories with us. Lastly, I must mention the community of Black and Brown providers who have been on this journey with me. They are part of the movement to bring more diversity into the aesthetics industry, and their passion and drive inspire me daily. Together, we’re making sure that the future of aesthetics is more inclusive, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud to be a part of.
