Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyson Green
Hi Tyson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Tyson Green, a creative soul who thrives on crafting from the ground up. My love for writing began with penning rhyming poetry during my school days, eventually evolving into a passion for spoken word and lyricism as a teenager. This love for words and storytelling paved a unique path for me.
In 2004, I traded my school life for military service, where I stayed until 2017. After hanging up my stripes, I took a daring leap into the fashion world, despite having no prior experience. This unexpected venture led to amazing opportunities. My brand, GSBS, even made its way into movie scenes, gracing both cinemas and Netflix screens, which established valuable connections within the film industry.
Being on film sets gave me a backstage pass to the intricacies of filmmaking, sparking my interest in screenplay writing. I took my first steps into this world through a free online BBC course and penned my first TV show pilot in 2019. However, it was in 2021, inspired by my personal experiences with mental health, that I took a deep dive into writing the film ‘Trigger-ed.’
With the support of friends, I brought ‘Trigger-ed’ to life, marking my debut as a director and producer. Since then, I’ve written more feature and short films, along with TV show pilot scripts. Joining the writer’s room for Channel 4’s ‘The Big Narstie Show’ was a pivotal moment in my writing journey, and I recently reached a new milestone by becoming a children’s book author with my debut work, ‘Doc Green and The Mind Monsters.’
In addition to these projects, I’ve also written and produced a web series called ‘The Video Shop’ and a mental health short film titled ‘Don’t mask it’, which highlights the true nature of masking our mental health issues. Currently, I’m in production on my new podcast called’ Struggle 2 Strength’, which explores the incredible journeys of individuals who have faced some of life’s hardest challenges and have emerged stronger, wiser, and more resilient.
My journey has been one of resilience, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of dreams, constantly evolving and finding new ways to share stories that matter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d say imposter syndrome was something i struggled with at the start of my creative journey. I would always question my work and sometimes not release it into the world because i feared judgement, but what i learnt along with the the way is that no matter what you do in life you’ll always be judged by someone, so just let it be and focus on the work and support you get, not the unsupportive negative outside influences.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work spans across multiple creative fields, including writing, directing, producing, and even fashion design. I started with a love for writing poetry and spoken word, which evolved into screenwriting and creating visual content. My journey has been anything but conventional, transitioning from a military career to the fashion world, and eventually to film and storytelling.
I specialise in writing and producing content that brings attention to important social issues, particularly mental health. My mental health short films, ‘Don’t mask it’ and ‘Trigger-ed’ are prime examples of my commitment to shedding light on the real struggles people face with mental health and the importance of addressing these issues openly.
Currently, I’m working on a podcast called ‘Struggle 2 Strength’, which focuses on sharing the incredible stories of individuals who have overcome life’s toughest challenges, emerging stronger and more resilient. These projects are deeply personal and resonate with my own experiences, which I believe is what sets my work apart. I bring a genuine understanding and passion for the topics I explore, aiming to connect with people on a real, human level.
One of my proudest achievements is my recent leap into children’s literature with my book, ‘Doc Green and The Mind Monsters’, which aims to help young readers understand and manage their emotions. This represents a full-circle moment for me, blending my creative talents with a mission to make a positive impact.
What sets me apart from others is my diverse background and the unique journey that brought me here from the military to fashion, to film, and now to podcasting and children’s books.
Each step has given me different perspectives and skills, enabling me to approach storytelling with authenticity and a multifaceted viewpoint.
My work is driven by a passion for creativity and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t doubt your work, because every creative idea has a beginning. To reach a high level of creativity, you have to keep creating, even if it means producing some less-than-great stuff along the way.
Nothing starts out perfect, but with persistent, positive energy focused on your goals, you’ll eventually come close to perfection. It’s during that journey, with all its ups and downs, that the real magic happens.
