Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Smith.
Hi Nick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a writer and storyteller,, amusing readers and listeners with tall tales of horseriding cats and continents lost in space. Once a few of my scripts were filmed, I realized the truth behind the myth that screenwriters are powerless when it comes to a movie’s end product. To gain more control and tell my own stories, I got involved in all aspects of filmmaking, from acting and camerawork to producing and editing. Now I am a veteran filmmaker with over 30 years of experience, directing and producing independent feature films and training the next generation of directors at SUNY Fredonia.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My filmmaking career has been a bumpy, ego-bruising adventure involving some major disappointments and many amazing adventures. I have achieved many of my dreams – directing feature films, acting on prime time TV, writing a bestselling novel. But none of those dreams have come true the way I expected them to, and they have taken longer to bring to fruition than I thought they would when I was starting out. One example: I always wanted to write for magazines, and assumed I’d use my movie knowledge in some articles. I never expected my first mag gig to be for a periodical that specialized in weddings. Over time, I learned to be patient, be proactive, and find unorthodox ways to pursue my passion for writing and moviemaking.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I tell stories every day. They may take the form of a college lecture, or the chapter of a novel, editing a documentary sequence, or directing a feature film.
Although I am best known as a writer and filmmaker, I have also taught for the past 30 years, whether it’s training a PA on set or coaching actors. I love seeing my students succeed in their chosen field; I am proud of them all.
I am noted for my dogged persistence. I never give up, I’m always inquisitive, and I always want to pass on what I’ve learned to others.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about our city is the sense of possibility and optimism, along with the cross-pollination of ideas from the eclectic cultures and mindsets around me. I don’t like being away from the city but I can’t really complain about the travel involved in my line of work. Its a blessing in the skies.
