Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Goutos
Hi Kay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
2 years ago I hit rock bottom. I had been in 2 back-to-back toxic relationships & had essentially given up on myself & my life. I needed a creative outlet to help work through my trauma & find my way back to myself. I fell in love with stand up comedy & have been working at it non stop for the past year & a half. I’m constantly writing new material, practicing at open mics weekly, & booking shows regularly. It fills my heart to the brim & has helped me work through so much.
Recently, I landed a role in my good friend’s indie movie. This is an absolute dream come true & I cannot wait to start filming in the winter!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been relatively smooth! Performing as well as the work behind the scenes of it all has come quite naturally to me & I truly enjoy it.
With that being said, comedy is an extremely difficult industry. There is quite a lot of gatekeeping & unfortunately women have quite the disadvantage. Also, I live in a small town in Upstate NY so there isn’t as many opportunities for my field as I would like. It all just fuels my fire & makes me even more determined, so I welcome any obstacle that comes my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a stand up comedian & an aspiring actor! My work is a reflection of myself, my life, & my experiences. I take pride in being vulnerable & authentic on stage in hopes to help people realize they are not alone in this life. Life is hard & we are only human, to find the humor in that is a strength & for that I’m forever grateful.
I am most proud of my ability to dive head first into something I’m passionate about & have a vision for. When I decided I wanted to be a famous comedian, I made a 5 & 10 year plan & committed to the project. I had my first show booked before I even did an open mic! Manifesting your future is way more powerful than people realize & it starts within. Anyone can dream a dream, but taking the necessary steps to make them a reality is daunting. I am so proud of myself for just going for it, regardless of what anyone thinks of me.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like in a small town in Upstate NY & love where I live, but have plans to move to NYC within the next couple of years as there’s way more opportunity for my field down there. This both excites & frightens me all at the same time as I’m a mountain girl through & through! Growth comes from stepping out of your comfort zone.
