We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeremy Maupin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Coming to Los Angeles was the biggest risk I had ever taken. I was 23 years old, and I wanted to pursue a career in acting. I had just a bit of pocket cash, a used Mazda, and a lot of hopes and dreams. There was no job waiting for me, no friends to greet me once I arrived, and no mentors to help guide the way. This was the biggest risk of my life, and until this day, there have been no regrets!

Jeremy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Jeremy Maupin.
I am the host and creator of a new travel adventure series called Refresh Quest, now airing on KLCS-PBS here in Los Angeles. The show centers around refreshing travel experiences. Each episode takes the viewer on a journey exploring refreshing destinations, people, and activities that uplift the mind and body and inspire the spirit within all of us to travel and see the world with a fresh perspective.
As a lifelong avid outdoor adventurer, the idea for Refresh Quest evolved while leading friends on expeditions throughout and around the Los Angeles area, where we would engage in surfing, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, or just about anything that would make for an excuse to get outside and have some fun. These adventures would have many positive physical, phycological, emotional, and social effects that ultimately I would want to share with the world.
I moved to Los Angeles from northern California out of college to pursue an acting career. Through a natural progression of wanting to be involved in storytelling, I worked in film and television, not only as an actor but also as a writer, director, editor, cinematographer, producer, and just about every other position in the storytelling process.
Health and wellness have always been a focal point for myself throughout my life, as I was diagnosed with asthma at an early age. This path led to studies in the medical fields, where I eventually pursued an EMT certification, which I have held for the past 10 years.
Bringing it full circle and putting it all together with Refresh Quest, I have combined all of these life experiences to tell stories that educate, inspire, and empower, all while keeping them engaging and entertaining. These are stories that refresh the mind and body and help uplift the human spirit.
Now that Refresh Quest Season One is complete, I am enthusiastically adventuring into a refreshing Season Two.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The reward or rewards come from the act of being creative itself. It gives me direction, connection, understanding, and most importantly, it makes me feel alive. This is not something that I desire or want; it is something I must do. Being an artist or creative is like adding fuel to my fire. This is what makes me get up in the morning and keeps me up at night. Being an artist is life for me.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I came to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actor. Although I still love the art of acting, I began to realize that I had more creative control when I was also writing, producing, and directing. Ultimately, I pivoted in a direction that I felt met all of my talents and gave me more control over my creativity and art. This only happened because I opened the door to more possibilities than just one.
