We were lucky to catch up with Britney Crosson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Britney, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
I started Fun Love Media as a one-woman-show (I’m a theater gal, can you tell?). I did everything myself. Every. Single. Thing. I brought on my first team member, Megan, after I had been doing social media marketing work for about 3 years on my own. I had recently started my podcast, The Social Sunshine Podcast, and knew that with my plans to build it into a huge show, I was going to need help. She and I met on social media in a business Facebook Group. I meet so many wonderful people on social media, which is one of the biggest reasons I love working in the industry. We took things slow. I would hand tasks off to her a little at a time as my budget allowed. Honestly, I’m so thankful that she was willing to do things that way because it made the whole situation easier to handle. Fast forward two years later and I have 4 team members, not including myself. Just as I did with Megan, I have handed over responsibilities gradually with everyone. 2 of my team members are family – my brother and my sister-in-law, which makes me really happy. I grew up working in a family business that my Dad and brother still work at to this day. Family businesses are incredibly special to me. While many people may avoid working with family, I’m the opposite. I love the special connection it creates between family members. But really, the entire Fun Love Media team is like family. My main piece of advice to business owners out there when it comes to building a team and hiring is to treat your people the way that you would want to be treated and pay them well. Even at times when my budget was really tight, I still paid my team members what they deserved to be paid. The entire business will be more successful if you treat your team members really well.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been a performer since I was a child and have been in numerous productions on stage and screen over the years. As a dancer and an actor, I thought of social media as one big stage when I first started using MySpace back in the day. It was so exciting to me. Apparently, my love of social media shined through to everyone connected to me, because in 2017 a couple of business owner friends asked me to help them with their social media pages. At the time I was still trying to figure out a way to make a living as an actor in Texas (not an easy feat, by the way). But I took on the work because I loved social media so much – may as well make some money, right?! One thing led to another and I finally decided to make Fun Love Media an official business in January 2019. Since then I’ve helped more than 20 clients with done-for-you services, have coached some amazing people 1:1, created and continued to host my weekly show, The Social Sunshine Podcast, and founded my membership for ambitious entrepreneurs that want to stand out on social media, Small Biz Social Society. Most people probably know me from my videos on social media dancing on my exercise equipment. That’s a whole other story! But I’m proud that I’ve built a personal brand on social media that’s allowed me to use my talents as a performer and to connect with so many cool people across the world.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My husband lost his job, along with so many others, back in 2020 when the pandemic was still in full-swing. He had been working in industrial construction since he was a teenager and had actually began feeling unhappy in that career. We had been brainstorming about him leaving construction which would allow me to grow Fun Love Media from part-time to big time. But we weren’t sure how we would begin making that happen. The day he lost his job he called me and said, “Do I head out tomorrow and find another construction job, or is this our chance?” I said, “This is our chance.” In that moment we decided to temporarily switch places when it came to career and family. He changed to working part-time and helping a lot more with the kids and at home. And I started hustling to grow Fun Love Media in a short period of time to make sure I covered his former construction salary. And, guess what? We did it in about 5 months! I was a 40 year old woman and was pursing a full-time career with my own business for the first time in my life. It felt amazing and scary at the same time! I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished since that day back in 2020.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media has been something that I’ve loved since the start. As a performer, I thought it was so cool to be able to reach an audience across the globe. For years and years I posted on social media . I learned and dabbled in marketing some side businesses on social. As I began to do work as a social media manager and content creator, I continued to build my own personal brand on social media simply by posting about things authentic to me and my life. But my really big social media moment came back in 2020 when I had my first viral videos on TikTok. TikTok allowed me to be myself and dance and lip sync and have fun on camera to my favorite music. Never before had I experienced this on the internet since music copywriting laws were so strict. It was through these viral videos that I began to fulfill my lifelong dreams of performing for millions of people. Oddly, I was doing much of this by dancing on my exercise equipment and not on a tv sitcom like I had planned. But, hey. An audience is an audience, right?! Showing up for people on social media is and always will be one of the greatest joys of my life. If you want to stand out on social media, here’s some advice for you. Choose a few key topics – one of them can be your business, of course – to post about on social media, and stick to them. Have focus. Talk about your topics over and over. And show up consistently for a very long time. It’s a long game, but it’s a fun one. And joining my membership, Small Biz Social Society is also an excellent thing to do, if I do say so myself.
