Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chris Arnold (A*). We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chris , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I wouldn’t single out one project as “the most meaningful,” as I’ve been fortunate to engage in a variety of opportunities that have allowed me to create deeply meaningful work. However, one of the more recent projects that holds a special place in my heart stems from a collaboration with the Ron Finley Project, based in South Central Los Angeles.
My introduction to this project was through an episode of PBS’s “To Dine For with Kate Sullivan,” where I had the pleasure of learning about Ron Finley, also known as the Gangster Gardener. His story and journey immediately resonated with me, and I was inspired to reach out and connect with him. Upon our first interaction, it became clear that we shared a creative connection, and we decided to embark on a collaborative marketing and fundraising campaign together.
I had the privilege of crafting artwork for this partnership, drawing from my passion for botanical art that highlights the intricate link between nature and the environment. Additionally, I was greatly influenced by Ron’s commitment to gardening. The centerpiece of this work revolves around flowering foods, serving a dual purpose. On one level, it captivates the viewer with its stunning floral imagery, while also conveying an educational message. The art showcases commonly grown flowering foods, promoting not only sustenance but also the idea of freedom.
Through this collaboration, we aimed to not only create visually appealing art but it will also be used as a vehicle to advocate for environmental equity, economy and justice. The artwork serves as a means of education, imparting knowledge about the natural world while inspiring individuals to take a more active role in nurturing their environments.
In essence, this project represents the kind of meaningful work I am passionate about—art that doesn’t simply serve as a decoration but also serves as a catalyst for change. It combines creativity with education, highlighting the beauty of nature and its connection to the environment while advocating for equity and justice. This collaboration with the Ron Finley Project holds great significance to me as it encapsulates my commitment to using art as a force for positive impact in the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey in the art world has been a colorful and evolving one. From an early age, I found myself drawn to creativity and self-expression, and my fascination with art began with an attempt to emulate the iconic styles of Jim Davis (Garfield), Gary Larson (The Far Side) and Matt Groening (The Simpsons). Those childhood attempts at recreating the magic of comics and cartoons were the seeds of my artistic passion.
As many artists can attest, my journey has been a blend of passion and dedication, which ultimately led me to pursue a professional career in the arts. I embarked on this pathway by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art from the University of Missouri, Columbia. It was during my time there that I honed my artistic skills and delved deeper into the world of fine art.
However, my artistic path took an interesting turn when I pursued a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Illustration from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). This academic pursuit opened up new horizons and expanded my artistic toolkit, leading me toward a career that leaned more heavily into illustration.
Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to work with various clients, which allowed me to explore various commercial markets in illustration and design. These experiences not only broadened my artistic versatility but also provided practical opportunities to bring my creative visions to life in commercial contexts.
Interestingly, my artistic path recently took a significant turn, especially around the time of the pandemic. The work I started to develop, still inspired by comics and cartoons, found itself bridging the gap between traditional fine art spaces along with illustrative and design spheres. This shift has allowed me to create art for gallery exhibitions and private commissions while still engaging in client work as an illustrator and designer.
Today, my creative career continues to evolve and adapt, reflecting my passion for art in all its forms. Whether I’m crafting pieces for galleries, collaborating with clients, or imparting my knowledge as an educator, I find a great deal of fulfillment in the ever-changing landscape of creativity. Each step of my journey has been a unique chapter, and I look forward to the exciting artistic endeavors that lie ahead.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
In my opinion, the most rewarding aspect of being a professional artist and illustrator is the unique opportunity to give back by helping others along their own creative journeys. This sense of fulfillment comes from two distinct but interconnected facets of my creative work.
As an artist and illustrator, I find immense joy and satisfaction in collaborating with fellow artists, designers and creatives. Sharing insights, techniques, and experiences within our creative community fosters a sense of camaraderie and growth. It’s an incredible feeling when one gets the chance to contribute to the artistic development of others, whether it’s through mentorship, collaborative projects, or simply offering support and encouragement. Witnessing the evolution and success of fellow artists nurtures a sense of pride and fulfillment that is deeply rewarding.
Secondly, as an educator, working with students and aspiring artists is a source of tremendous fulfillment. Using my own creative experiences to guide and inspire the next generation of artists is a privilege I hold dear. Watching students flourish, gain confidence, and find their unique artistic voices is immensely gratifying. It’s not just about imparting knowledge but also nurturing creativity, self-expression, and a passion for the arts. The ability to help students discover their creative potential and navigate the challenges of their artistic journeys brings a profound sense of joy.
In essence, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the opportunity to be a catalyst for the growth and development of others. Whether it’s through collaboration with peers or mentoring students, the ability to share my creative experiences and contribute to the creative growth of others is a source of deep satisfaction and purpose in my journey.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of the most significant driving forces behind my creative journey is a commitment to promoting environmental awareness, equity, and conservation. This mission utilizes my creative expression through a diverse range of projects in the fields of art, illustration, and academia, each with its own unique story and significance.
My creative endeavors have always been intertwined with a passion for the environment and a dedication to raising awareness about its preservation. Through art, I am hoping to visually communicate the beauty and fragility of our natural world. My illustrations often serve as a powerful tool to convey messages of environmental stewardship and the urgent need for conservation efforts.
In the academic sphere, my work as an Associate Professor at Columbia College Chicago takes on a different dimension. Through research and educational projects, I strive to empower individuals with knowledge and insights that can drive positive change. Whether it’s through my classroom, lectures, workshops, or publications, my goal is to inspire a sense of responsibility towards the environment and promote equity in access to natural resources.
One of the most significant aspects of my journey has been my work with the National Park Service. This partnership has allowed me to connect my creative pursuits with tangible, real-world impact. Whether it’s through teaching in awe-inspiring natural settings, like the Petrified Forest National Park, or serving as an Artist-in-Residence at the Indiana Dunes National Park, my work with the National Park Service has reinforced the importance of preserving our natural treasures.
In short, my creative journey is underpinned by a mission that weaves together a career as an artist and educator to passionately advocate for environmental awareness, equity, and conservation. Each project I take on adds to this mission, allowing me to engage with these crucial issues in distinct and meaningful ways.
