We were lucky to catch up with Arca Sánchez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Arca, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was about 15 years old when I decided to pursue music as a career. I was 16 when I got my first big break! I got to sing on a major FM station (107.1 Super Estrella) for a small contest called ‘5 Minutes of Fame.’ After winning the contest, I won the prize of being able to sing on live TV the very next day, early in the morning, on Univision in Los Angeles.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my musical journey when I was about 15 years old, but it wasn’t until I was 23 that I truly got my chance to shine. That was when I was given the opportunity of a lifetime! I auditioned and became a member of Stevie Wonder’s KJLH Radio Free Voices choir. Needless to say, it was the greatest four years of my life! It took me years of hard work and dedication to get to that moment. Not to mention the help of a great mentor to get me there (my good friend Faye Stamper).
In 2022, I took a chance on a solo career and released my first ever solo project. My first two singles, “Loco Enamorado” and “Crazy in Love,” are part of the regional Mexican/Banda genres of music. “Loco Enamorado” rose to #9 in parts of Mexico. My latest single, “me lates un montón” (aka I like you a lot), follows that beautiful, traditional Mexican sound with more of a Sierreo feel. The guitars truly make the song!
I am mixing musical legacy with the modern, taking everything I’ve learned from the greats and implementing that into my music. I use my songs to reflect on life’s experiences while telling the stories of the legends who paved the way for us. I’m rather enjoying this era of my life, which I call creating with intention. Now that is truly what I am most proud of.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of making music is meeting the wonderful people who make my career possible and getting to share my music with the world. Traveling to new places and meeting people of all walks of life—what could be more exhilarating?

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My true mission right now is to be a voice for the voiceless. I will continue to use my music as a platform to shine a light on the issues that must be addressed. I am a proud civil rights advocate, fighting for black, brown, and LGBTQIA issues.
