Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to William Fernandes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
William, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission of Mustang Metal & Wood Works is to focus on growth of knowledge.
In the years to come, I plan to grow and expand to be able to open a school to reintroduce knowledge of the trades to all ages of this modern world. To give those looking for a hobby, independence, or a career access to the knowledge I have been blessed to come by.
In the meantime MMWW will continue to produce and deliver detail oriented and long lasting decks, patio covers, pergolas and much more.
William, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In the course of my working career, I have served under many titles and roles. With minimal hands on fatherly guidance, I began my “investigation” into how things are made by simply taking them apart. Receiving many “don’t do that” and “why did you do that” talks from my Mom, it was apparent to her that I needed a guidance on this topic. Through a family friend I got my first job in construction at 15, building Timber Frame homes at that, WOW. That was a big growth opportunity, and from there my interest grew greatly. Graduating H.S. was the first end to my construction career as I enlisted into the USCG, however it didn’t end my curiosity. 4+ years of active duty, I spent many hours of my personal time using my creative side to build furniture and decorative pieces. At the end of my military career I gave construction another shot, starting my own business for the first time under the name Boomer’s Basics, As much success as I had, it was not conducive with starting a family, with finances and time demands.
Years passed and along the way my skills widened, becoming proficient at Welding and Fabrication was a game changer for my self growth that I could apply on the business front.
November 2021, in fact the week of Thanksgiving, I stepped out on my own full time, with a bit of a nudge from the universe and the way events had unfolded. Since then Mustang Metal & Wood Works has been growing and me as well.
The most consistent thing in all of my life is learning, I have loved to learn, whether by hands on experience, side by side with amazing coworkers, or studying manuals/guides.
I have a will forever enjoy creating, because of this striving to give our customers quality and lasting decks/pergolas/pavilions is not the limit of what is being done at MMWW. I am currently working to produce custom furniture for our store inventory. With full custom options in all of our products and services, I will help you achieve your goals and fill your needs.
With a back ground in Timber Framing, I have taken my knowledge, and used that to design a modified timber frame style construction that is beautiful, very strong. and much more cost effective for our customers.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I imagine there are not many business owners who go about it the way I have, my last paycheck and the tools I had accumulated over the years is all the capital I had to start my business.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Rental, rental of tools and equipment is excellent passive income. Tools I will need to do the job can also make money when not in use on my jobsites. I also encourage my crew members to find their own (side) jobs to grow themselves/reputation/confidence. Being as they are not in the position to run their own business pay for insurance ect, they pay to work under my business name and reputation.
