We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emauri Singletary a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emauri , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
From a young age, I understood that in order to achieve big goals, you have to take even bigger risks. Attempting to make a living pursuing the things I’m passionate about has been the biggest risk of my life so far. My entire life has revolved around being in tough or uncomfortable situations but what many people don’t understand is that it isn’t until you’re close to drowning, that you learn how well you can swim.
Putting all of my time throughout the last 7 years into playing guitar and making music has been a huge risk in itself. Even during my time in college, making music was a priority so after graduating from my school in Charleston, SC, I moved to Atlanta, GA to be better positioned to do music and content creation full time. I exhausted every last dollar I saved because for me, it was a risk worth taking. As of currently, I’ve been living in Georgia for a year and it has been an adventure; I’ve had the opportunity to meet several talented artists, I’ve built an incredible at-home studio, and even been fired from a part time job for putting my foot down with an unfair employer. This past year alone has provided me with more experiences than I needed but what I’ve learned is that the world rewards those who take risks.
Apart from making and producing music, I make YouTube videos on guitar content as well. And after living in Atlanta for a few months, I was lucky enough to have some, who watches my content, send me several guitars and music equipment to assist me with my music endeavors. It was probably the craziest thing that had ever happened to me but it made me feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
Even though I’ve been in Atlanta for over a year now and have built a small name for myself, I have no desire to let off the gas anytime soon. Everyone has their own personal hardships and the ones I face can’t be compared to the next person’s but some fights are worth fighting. Going after what you want is never easy, but the journey you’ll embark on will be the most meaningful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I received my first guitar as a gift for my 10th birthday and after playing guitar for some time, I wanted an outlet where I could share my many song creations for any ears that were interested. I sat on the idea of officially becoming an artist for some months until I finally took action and started learning how to record and produce music. It was one of those things where I never felt like I was truly ready, I just had to take initiative and do it since it was something deeply exciting to me. Fast forward to 2023, I’ve been playing guitar for nearly 13 years and do freelance music production work for online clients as well as guest appearances on songs.
In 2020, I started a Youtube channel (Mon Floral Garden) to merge my passion for music with my love for making content. Since I was already skilled in filming/editing videos from making skateboarding videos as a child, I felt like YouTube was a perfect outlet for me to do everything I enjoy doing in one place. Being a content creator is something that puts a smile on my face every day I wake up and I’m hoping it yields success for the decades to come.
As a creator/musician I receive weekly messages from supporters about how my music or content has inspired them or even people inquiring to share advice with them. The thing that makes me different from most is that I value everything; every good thing that comes my way, every engagement I have with someone, everyone that takes time to enjoy the music I put out. A little thing can turn into something big if you know how to nurture it so I never take things for granted.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There’s nothing better than knowing how to express yourself through different mediums. As an artist, I’m able to package my emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a way that can be appreciated by virtually anyone. It’s the ability to share a piece of myself that makes being an artist so rewarding. Every project I’ve made started as an empty canvas and each element added to that canvas is crucial in delivering the intended message. Simply being able to create something meaningful, from the ground up, and then share it with the world gives me a feeling of purpose and that’s why I love what I do so much.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to do things differently. Whether it’s making a song, publishing a YouTube video, or running a business, I always want to do things in a manner that’s authentic to me. I want to show people that you don’t need to do things a certain way just because everyone else is. I make music with a unique style because I understand the value in being original. I think many people would be surprised at what they could achieve if they stopped worrying about everyone else and focused on doing things in ways that work for them. Everyone possesses different strengths, perspectives, and upbringings so why not use them to your advantage.
