Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie Tjosvold. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Naming a business is really tough! Before moving to Seattle I owned a gift box and floral/succulent company in Marin County, California. I still love florals, and wanted to incorporate that into my interior design business. I have florals photographed in each of my spaces once the design is complete. My parting gift to each client and space, is a large bouquet of wildflowers. Thus, I loved the name Wildflower Interiors. I love that it incorporates both of my loves. Interior Design and flowers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got back into interior design after a momming hiatus. I have always gravitated to interior design, and making a home cozy, and inviting. I started my college career in in Interior Design, and then pivoted and got my BA in Liberal Arts, and a k-5 teaching credential. While I was a stay at home mom, we decided to renovate our Mid Century Modern home in Seattle, and I fell in love with interior design all over again. It just makes me so darn happy, and I love making homes a beautiful haven!
Wildflower Interiors is a full-service interior design firm in Issaquah, providing services for all areas of Seattle and the Eastside. Characterized by a stylish, and livable approach to design. Creating an inviting display of beauty, organization, comfort, and casual elegance throughout is my goal for every project. I really love working closely with my clients. I am inspired by collaboration and bringing my clients vision to life down to the finest details. At the end of the day I want our clients to love the space we have created, and I think it is important to have the clients be involved in the process.
I love styling spaces when we are done with the design, and sprinkling them with wildflowers…thus our name.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I started a gift box , succulent, and flower company in Marin County California while I was pregnant with my now 7 year old. The business was growing, and then my husband got a job offer in Bellevue, Washington. We made the decision as a family to move up, and make a change.
It turned out to be the best thing for our family, we were able to buy a home, and we had another son to add to our family. I became a stay at home mom. But I missed the creative side of owning a business, and having an outlet. I think that stay at home parents do so much, and while it is amazing to be home with your kiddos, sometimes we are missing an important independent piece of life. For me it was the creative aspect that I missed most, and working with people. Interior design is my passion, and I feel super lucky to be able to tap back into that part of me that I had missed, and really needed to fill again.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I feel super lucky to have met some local designers and business women in the Seattle area To be honest I am astounded by the amount of learning and networking that comes with finding local online communities. I have learned so much, and met a lot of business connections through local Facebook and design communities. Also, I love listening to all the interior design podcasts that are out there now.
My advice to any new designers would be to learn from, and take advantage of these resources. There is so much free information out there. Ask questions, and use these resources as much as possible. They have helped me to much on my journey to starting my own interior design business.
