Do you have a manager, agent or representative who helps you sign or close deals? Why or why not? If you do have one, how did you find them and how did you know they were the right one for you? Signing with an agent (at the time) felt like the coolest thing on Earth. It was one of the things that really validated my decision to get into the creative arts. I’m not signed with this agency anymore, so I won’t drop names, but of course you find out certain things about the industry that you don’t know until you’re signed. Our story for signing with an agent is strange. The catalyst for the entire process was seeing a flyer posted in a music school in downtown Minneapolis advertising the need for a guitarist who could sing. At the time, I was working full-time at a church and didn’t have a steady band outside my job, so I was actively seeking opportunities. I called the number and spoke with another local musician who wanted to manage a dueling guitar band. My first question was, ‘Does it have to be another guitar? There are 5 main dance agencies in Los Angeles: Bloc, MSA, Go 2 Talent, MTA and Clear Talent. Most of them hold open auditions in Los Angeles once or twice per year. And many send scouts out to dance conventions all over the country looking for commercial dancers that would be a good fit. It’s important to know they are not all alike.
