Jackie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I was a little girl, I suffered from having chickenpox twice, which is rare. This event left me with dark spots covering my legs. I was very insecure about them and tried everything to get rid of them. Then I got pregnant with my first daughter, and stretch marks became my new insecure issue. I developed a cream for myself that seems to work well. My husband convinced me to make it for others like me. Naturally Unmarked is a body care line catered to improving and treating your skin’s stretch marks, scars, and dark spots for everyday use.
Jackie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I recently graduated with a masters in Merchandising and I was inspired by my professors who’s research is about sustainability. I want finish my research on sustainability but create a business that can improve lives while being green.
Naturally Unmarked products focus on maintaining moisture, removing dead skin, and renewing your skin’s elasticity. We use natural and organic ingredients such as raw shea butter and coconut oil to heal and restore your skin’s natural softness and texture. A perfect blend of oils, creams, and raw cane sugar are used to make each batch of our whipped body butter or body scrubs.
Each batch is done by hand, and is made to order to preserve freshness. We also have a reuse and refill recycling program that allows customers to reuse their containers instead of throwing them away. I want to create a sustainable brand and help decrease the amount of waste on our planet.
We are currently working on a mission that combines our Refill & Reuse program with local women shelters to give back. I hope we can make changes in the world one step at a time.
Since launching Naturally Unmarked we have made great changes to improve customer’s experience. My COO Mrs. Tarnesha Miller and I have worked on strategies to further increase of efforts and improve product quality, product development, and our business management.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve worked as a fashion designer for 7 years and during that period I was able to work with amazing and interesting people. At one point of my career I was a freelance designer because I wanted to start my own design business. This job allowed me to work for myself while picking up contracts. My job was to help others build collections and brands by creating designs, patterns, sewing samples, and working with factories. One particular contract gave me the opportunity to meet new people, but I was taken advantage of. This individual took my kindness and lack of business experience to their full advantage and made me believe that we were building a business together and I will be a full time employee for them. I didn’t understand exactly what I was doing, but I wanted to help as much as possible.
In the end (after a couple of years) I realized that they were only building a brand for themselves and all the hard work I did no one knew. I decided to pivot my thinking and my career. I went back to school to learn the business skills of fashions and merchandising, so I can start my own brand that will help improve lives.
Sometimes you have to go through challenges and hardships to push yourself to start something new. If you are too comfortable in the position you are in it is time for a change. It is time to try something new or push yourself harder.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Naturally Unmarked is my third business, and my first successful one. When I say successful, I mean that anything needed for the business can be purchased with the profits from the business. My other businesses were successful from what I learned from each mistake and challenge. Since launching in May 2021, the brand has a gained attraction on TikTok, and one of our videos went viral (over 1M views). This lead to growth from 200 followers to almost 10,000 in three weeks.
One of the things I learned is to build a community of customers or supporters who understand your business concept. Be relatable and show how your products can improve customers lives. We push our sustainability efforts and brand concept (organic & vegan ingredients) with every post and promotion ad. We make sure that customers know that they are purchasing products that contain quality ingredients and the love put in each product idea.
