We recently connected with Sherese Patton and have shared our conversation below.
Sherese , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
After graduating from college and obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I had a hard time figuring out what to do with it. Trying to find a job in marketing posed to be a harder task than I anticipated. I remembered that I had taken a Public Relations course and it was one of the classes I got the highest score in. I decided then and there to look more into that industry and see what working in it looks like.
After learning that my cousin started a beauty brand, I took her on as a pro bono client as a way of getting my foot in the door of the industry and start building my portfolio. Always a learner, I decided that I wanted to really get some hands-on experience, so I enrolled in a Masters’s Degree program and obtained my Masters in PR in September 2019.
I decided then that there was no reason why I couldn’t do this on my own and start my own agency. From there, The Patton Agency was born, and we are going 5 years strong now!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sure! Well my name is Sherese Patton and I am from Detroit, MI where I live with my kids. The name of my agency is The Patton Agency, a boutique PR agency that works with Beauty and Lifestyle brands and Non – profit agencies. The Patton Agency is dedicated to helping businesses and organizations build strong and positive relationships with their audience. We specialize in creating strategic communication plans tailored to meet our clients’ unique needs. Our team of talented professionals are passionate about delivering exceptional PR services that help our clients achieve their goals.
During the course of our work with our clients, we study their business so we can apply the right strategies. We put in the work to make sure your brand is seen by those who can make an impact on your business. We provide a hands-on public relations experience with services ranging from publicity, marketing, social media, personal branding, and event PR that gives the brand the visibility it deserves.
Over the course of this journey, The Patton Agency has secured features on several blogs, and in digital magazines such as She Is Magazine, Hustle and Soul Magazine, and Forbes. She Is Magazine gave us our first cover story for a client! That was such an amazing feeling for us and for the client!
That set the bar for what we knew we were able to accomplish.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think the easiest time for almost everyone would be COVID. I had just finished my Master’s Degree program and had just acquired a new client when the COVID outbreak first started. Of course, no one knew what was exactly going on, but there was definitely something in the air, we had just begun to strategize on what their messaging was and how we wanted to convey it when we got quarantined!!! It was such a blow for them and me as we had just got started.
We had to immediately come up with plan B and had no clue what that was obviously. After about a month of only speaking by phone and trying to come decide whether to continue or not, we began to video chat and decided to use social media way more than we had originally planned. Using this method, we were able to keep their product campaign going by creating webinars we broadcasted on YouTube and also on social media.
This gave me an idea as well. I began to promote that I was holding virtual consultations for business owners who were looking for was to keep their brands in the eyes of their customers/clients, which led to a lot more business for me.
It worked out, but that was a crazy time that I hope we never have to experience again!

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
When we first acquire a new client we send out and blast to our subscribers and post them to social media announcing they’re now a part of the “Patton Agency Family.” We then hope weekly meetings with them, and send them updates on things that have been accomplished. It is important to keep constant communication with your clients to let them know you are working on their behalf to bring forth the results they want.
Even after our time with them is over, we keep them informed about business updates, including new services, and any upcoming events that way may be attending that would be beneficial to them. We also send out end out email updates, or social media posts to stay top of mind.
