We caught up with the brilliant and insightful A’Lexus Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
A’Lexus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
The best boss that I ever had in the past 7 years has most definitely been myself, not to step on any of my previous “bosses” toes or make my own head big but the truth stands. I say this to say that the best teachers in life are your own personal experiences. I believe that being a great leader requires a combination of qualities including empathy, communication skills, having a vision and the ability to inspire and motivate others; in my experience working in the corporate world many didn’t always possess these qualities in a fulfilling way to me. Could they have done better yes, could I have done better.. absolutely but when all the qualities don’t align for the same end goal its not at its maximum potential, regardless of who’s end it came from. Working for myself alone has taught me sooo much more than a job has.. ever! That’s not to say that they didn’t teach me anything but they couldn’t teach me the experiences for my own personal success. I started my business in the middle of a pandemic and it THRIVED and that was enough for me to want more for myself, my family and my community. I’ve done and been apart of such things as haircut/style giveaways, toys, food and clothes drives, Vendors for pop up events etc. Its such a rewarding experience to learn first hand of running a business, MY business! I haven’t failed me yet and don’t plan on it because I know that God is within me and I will not fail.

For those of you whom may not know me, my name is A’Lexus Jones. 25 and I am CEO/Founder of CrownedByLex LLC. Currently South Kansas City, Mo based, CrownedByLex is a total barber-salon experience! Specializing in men and boys hair care; concentrating on overall health of hair and scalp, creating modern, trendy and classic hairstyles for men and boys such as Locs, Haircuts and Braids. Always being a student in my craft I am able to help solve various hair problems that a lot of men may face such as hair thinning with locs, hair breakage/damage, dandruff and itchy scalp, split ends and frizz. I can also help to find the right hairstyle that suites face shapes, hair type and lifestyle. Overall creating a space for men to be man=pered. I think what sets me apart from others is my unique style and creativity. Creating services custom to my clients personalities and preferences. I am able to educate on my high quality hair products and recommend what I think is best for my clients based on hair types and needs. Also building my portfolio, social media and all my positive reviews help me stand out the most. What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The biggest thing that helped me build my reputation has been consistency, word of mouth from satisfied clients and investing in my craft. Consistency because it is the key to a successful business.. you don’t have to be the best you just have to be consistent, this establishes trust which can lead to repeat business, positive reviews and referrals. Consistency will improve your efficiency and provide a better experience for your clients. Word of mouth because we live in a time of dragging people on social media so do your best in everything so there’s only positive things to say.. your client is a walking vision board/advertisement and if people like it they’re going to ask who did it and your client will tell them! Invest in yourself because if you don’t, why should anyone else? Investing in yourself can help you improve your skills, build your confidence and establish yourself in your area of work which can lead to a higher client satisfaction, more positive reviews and referrals and increased revenue. They say it takes money to make money if that’s what your in to.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me lately has been Online Booking. Booksy was recommended to me by Von Clipz, owner of Beyond Texture Barber Salon. He asked me one day what booking app I was using, At the time I had been using Square,, He then asked why don’t I use a booking app that promotes my business more and I didn’t have a reason to not be using better tools for my business so I switched to Booksy. Booking an appointment is now easy and convenient for my clients and I, as they can book online 24/7 without having to call or wait for text messages. It helps me manage my schedule more efficiently and reduce the risk of double booking or scheduling conflicts. Accepts payments online also protects your business from no call no shows and cancellations for $30/mo. This is not an ad but a good review because its been the best source of new clients for my business.
