We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Jameson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
A membership based organization is about putting members first. Developing relationships, providing intentional and meaningful programming and events, while not getting ahead of their needs and wants. It is also important to take risks if you want to scale. Making strategic investments in community building and partnerships to grow and amplify the organization which provides opportunities for the members. With a member-first focus the organization can provide additional engagement opportunities both internally and externally, may it be membership spotlights, volunteer opportunities, or serving on the numerous committees or potentially joining the board. It is also important to be fiscally responsible and keep a keen eye on finances and budget – while not being afraid to expand and push to provide an atmosphere that is designed to represent and grow all businesses, members, and individuals at their own pace.
Morgan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Equality Chamber is the premier LGBTQ+ chamber in the DC Metro Region focusing on LGBTQ+ business owners, leaders, individuals, and allies. We provide opportunities events and programs ranging from networking, educational, volunteer, community engagement,
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referrals. One of the most meaningful measures of success is when members make referrals of new members. They are proud to participate with us to the point where they want others to experience the same opportunities they have.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Listening to the needs and wants of our members and developing opportunities to meet those needs. By providing unique experiences and engagement opportunities, this in turn results in people engaging for the first time, or the first time in a while. We continue to see new faces and engage with new people whenever we offer expanded opportunities of engagement.
