We were lucky to catch up with Rinah Gardner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rinah, thanks for joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
I can’t say enough about how my parents’ great example impacted my life and career! First, instilling a positive mindset. We are definitely a “glass half full” kind of family! Another would be raising me plant-based. We were all-natural, head to toe, inside & out, before it was popular! Plant-based products weren’t available mainstream, so my mom would make a lot of things we needed from scratch, including hair products, such as oils. Now, as a Natural Hair Care Specialist & salon owner, I’m able to implement what she taught me to help my clients achieve and maintain healthy hair! Lastly, I’d say watching my father run his own, very successful business, back home in Bermuda was key! He’d have me help him create invoices and reports, teaching me early the business side of being an entrepreneur, and how you have to wear many hats. As successful as he was, he always remained humble & moved with integrity, things I apspire to maintain within my own business. So big thanks to my parents (and grandparents that raised them)!

Rinah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for hair started as a kid! My mom taught us about the importance of self care early on. I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Bermuda! Growing up, there weren’t many natural hair salons on the island, so my mom would spend time every week or 2 weeks pouring love into our (mine and my 2 sisters’) hair with treatments & styling! When I was 11, I started doing my own, helping with my sisters’ hair, and eventually doing my moms hair. Now it’s been 20 years since I’ve been doing hair professionally! My focus is healthy hair! From styling, to products I use and recommend, I want my clients to look and feel great when they leave the salon! I maintain positive vibes within my space and want clients to relax and enjoy their experience! My specialties are loc and twists services! I love all things art & doing hair is an expression of my art! My business is named Crowned Natural, I specialize in black hair, and as a ROYAL people I help maintain the CROWN!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My business went through a major change when covid 19 hit! I had to change locations. I left a big shop/ salon space, and moved into a salon suite. There wasn’t much info on the virus in the beginning, and I felt the move could help me ensure a safer environment for my clients and myself. It ended being a blessing and my clients are loving the new space!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I take pride in my work and value each of my clients! I strive to give everyone that sits in my chair a great experience and excellent styling! I feel that I truly have the best clientele! When they leave the salon, my work is well represented! When your clients are happy, it shows, and they will be happy to refer you to others!
