We were lucky to catch up with Ron Seay recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ron, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
To be honest I really didn’t know I was an artist. I’ve always drawn and painted but really didn’t think much of it. After High School I was unaware what I really wanted to do in life. I convinced my mom to let me have a year to think about what career field I wanted to pursue. One year came and went pretty fast & I knew I was on a deadline to make a decision. I’ve always been intrigued with electronics & how it actually worked so I chose that path at first. After one year of electronic engineering school, I soon realized this really wasn’t the career path for me. I had recently seen a commercial of Nossi College of Art and almost instantly knew it was my calling.

Ron, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So after Art college I landed my first job at Bell South Yellow pages creating ads for the phone book. Over the next 10-15 years I worked for mostly art production and pre-press work. From magazine ads, billboard signs, mail flyers, postcards and newspaper ads. Soon the internet would hit the industry hard and print media took a dive. It was hard keep a steady job and at the time I had two little ones to take care of. I left the industry due to burnout and I needed more stable work to help take care of my family. A few years later ran into an artist Brandon Keeble who you recently did a spotlight article on & he asked me to come to one of his art shows. I was truly inspired by his work and passion. That re-lit my passion & helped me jump back into the art world but have a different take on it this around. I had gone through a lot of personal changes over the years and therefore I wanted my art to reflect that aspect of my life. Less digital art design and more hands on canvas/paint. I felt canvas painting had a deeper and more natural feel. You can really express yourself and visually show it through paintings.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to do what I want with no rules or regulations. I’ve always been a type of person who pushed the rules and with canvas art there are really no set rules on what can be done. This newfound area of art helped me express my emotions and sharing the insights of what inspires a particular painting and art piece brings me enjoyment.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Everyones journey in life is different. I chose art to help me express and navigate thru the experiences of life. Everyone’s art speaks differently to different people. Even if someone’s art isn’t your style you still should have respect to the whole creative aspect of it and where it’s coming from. We all have our reason why we create what we do and that’s the true beauty of art.
